Bettye Clissold Obituary

Bettye Branch Clissold SOUTHERN SHORES, NC - Bettye Branch Clissold of Southern Shores, NC, died peacefully at her home on April 12, 2014 after a brief yet courageous battle with leukemia. Bettye was born January 23, 1931 in Jackson, TN and was the daughter of Ruby Homesly Branch and John Lee Branch of Jackson, TN. She was a graduate of Jackson High School and a 1953 graduate of Lambuth University, where she was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi and very involved in the University's many social activities. Upon graduation Bettye was a stewardess for United Airlines and while living in New York she met her husband, John. After living in New York for several years they moved to Charlotte, NC and lived there for 28 years. Bettye was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Providence Country Club, Opera Guild of Charlotte and Junior Women's Club. Bettye also enjoyed playing tennis and bridge. Bettye and John relocated to Mt. Pleasant, SC in 1998 where they were members of Christ Episcopal Church, Snee Farm County Club, Charleston Symphony League, East Cooper Women's Club and several bridge clubs. In August 2013, Bettye and John moved to Southern Shores, NC where they were members of Duck Woods Country Club and Bettye enjoyed meeting new friends in several bridge clubs. Although her time spent on the Outer Banks was short her days were filled with many visits from her children and her grandchildren. Bettye is survived by her husband of 58 years, John Richardson Clissold of the home. She is also survived by her two sons, John Richardson Clissold II and wife, Gabrielle of Englishtown, NJ and Tod Branch Clissold of Manteo, NC and daughter-in-law, Susan Clissold of Southern Shores, NC; and by her four grandchildren, Asher Clissold and Simon Clissold of Englishtown, NJ and George Clissold and Caroline Clissold of Southern Shores, NC. Bettye also leaves behind many lifelong friends in Charlotte, NC and Mt. Pleasant, SC. To her many friends, Bettye was a woman of special qualities, including her wonderful sense of humor, beautiful blue eyes and her love of her family. Her spirit never wavered and her positive outlook carried her in her final days. A memorial service will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church in Southern Shores, NC on April 26, 2014 at 11AM with The Revered Thomas Wilson officiating.
