Betty Hrafnhildur Obituary

Hrafnhildur Betty Young SUMMERVILLE - Hrafnhildur Betty Young, age 70, beloved wife of William John Young, Jr., lost her courageous, fourteen year battle with cancer on January 10, 2014. Betty was born on December 20, 1943 in Keflavik, Iceland, the daughter of Adolf Helgason and Gudrun Indridadottir. In late 1970 she met William, a USAF Captain assigned to the Iceland Defense Force as part of the US commitment to NATO. They were married in July 1971 resulting in more than forty-two years of happiness. After retirement from the USAF in 1986, they returned to Charleston where William was born. Residing in Mt. Pleasant, Betty, a licensed cosmetologist, remained in business until 2012. In February, 2012 they moved to Summerville, SC. Besides William, Betty is survived by their daughter Gudrun Helga Mehring and her spouse Monique Mehring; two step grandchildren, Lauren and Jacob Pirrung all of New Windsor, MD. In Iceland, she is survived by her brother, Vilhelm Adolfsson, and sister, Sigridur Adolfsdottir, plus numerous nieces and nephews. In Mount Pleasant she is survived by her brothers-in-law, Larry Young (Angela) and Allen Young; sisters-in-law Jane Malcolm (Bob) and Joy Altman (Paul) plus numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother and father, mother and father-in-law (William J. Young and Mary Heiterer Young), and her older brother, Indridi Adolfsson. A visitation will be held in J. Henry Stuhr Inc, Mt. Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road, Sunday, January 19, 2014 from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM. Please no flowers! Funeral Services will be held at a later date in the Lutheran church in Keflavik, Iceland. Betty's cremated remains will be interred with her parents in the Keflavik cemetery. William's cremated remains will follow upon his demise.
