Betty Hoats Obituary

Betty Loucille Peerman Hoats SUMMERVILLE - Betty Loucille Peerman Hoats, 91, of Summerville, SC, passed away on December 6th, 2023. A private memorial honoring her love for the outdoors will be held by her family. Betty was born in Carey, Idaho, in 1932 to the late John Samuel Peerman and Elva Durfee Peerman Reese. She met and married her late husband, Julian (Jay) Carrol Hoats of Charleston, SC, in Long Beach, California, in 1948. Together, they raised five children and built their family home in Summerville after Jay's Navy assignments in San Diego, Annapolis and Portsmouth. She retired after enjoying a career in customer service at South Carolina National Bank (now Wells Fargo). Betty was an avid beachcomber and Master Gardener and was a member of the Summerville Iris Society. She is fondly remembered as a genuine and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend, with an adventurous spirit and passion for nature. Surviving her are her children, Steve Hoats of Smyrna, GA, Debbie Thames of McClellanville, SC, and Deanna Powers of Bonneau, SC, as well as seven grandchildren, Aimee Adams, Andrew Adams, Jennifer Huisman Evans, Lauren Doyle, Ross Thames, Richard Hoats and Kristin Stullenbarger; 12 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Harold L. Peerman; her daughter, Cheryl Hackstadt; her son, David Hoats and grandson, C.J. Nelson.
