Betty Hirst Obituary

HIRST, Betty FLORENCE, SC - Betty Brown Hirst, 98, of Florence, died Monday, February 9, 2009 in a Florence health care facility after a brief illness. She was born in Paxville, SC a daughter of the late Richard Alexander and Edith Irene Touchberry Brown. She was a graduate of Florence High School and a graduate of Palmer Business School. She was the Past National President and General Conference Chairman for the National Association of Insurance Women. She was the Past President of the Women's Symphony Guild and served as Treasurer and Ticket Foreman for the Florence Guild. She also was a member of John Calvin Presbyterian Church where she served as a secretary for 17 ½ years before retiring. She had been employed as Assistant Auditor of the Reinsurance Department of Seibels, Bruce and Company and later served them as Advertising Director. She was preceded in death by her parents. Surviving are her sisters, Lydia Brown Johnson of Charleston and Edna Brown Barbare of Columbia; brother, Nelson (Katie Belle) Brown of Florence; 10 nieces; 12 nephews and 3 caretakers. Memorials may be made to the McLeod Hospice of the Pee Dee, PO Box 100551, Florence, SC 29502. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, February 12, 2009 in the STOUDENMIRE-DOWLING FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 - 2 PM Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home. Visit our guestbook at www.charleston.net/deaths.
