Betty Cross Obituary

Betty Rae Burris Cross MONTGOMERY, AL - Betty Rae Burris Cross, 92, passed away on November 29, 2017 at her home in Montgomery, Ala. after a few weeks of sudden illness. A native of Charleston until 2012, her Memorial Service and "Celebration of BeBe's Life" will be held at John Wesley United Methodist Church Chapel, 626 Savannah Hwy at 11:00am, Sat, Jan 13th. Interment with family will be held at 11:00am, Fri, Nov. 12th, at Riverview Memorial Park Cemetery, N. Charleston, where Betty will be laid to rest with her Mom & Dad. Betty was born in Charleston on Jan. 4, 1925, daughter of the late Alonzo A. Burris, Sr. (PaPa) and Eva O'Neta Viard Burris (NeNe). She was predeceased by her brother, Alonzo (Lonnie) A. Burris, Jr. Betty attended Memminger School for Girls, Charleston, and Georgia State College for Women, Milledgeville, Ga., earning a degree in Secretarial Business. Betty (BeBe to almost everyone that knew her) was a member of Pisgah UMC, Fountain Inn, SC, former member of John Wesley UMC, a former member of Putney UMC, during the time she resided in Putney & Albany, Ga, active member of the Ladies Eighties "Staying Alive" Club of Charleston, and a member and active supporter of the Charleston Hat Ladies. She loved family, bridge, dancing, and organizing the yearly family vacations at Thanksgiving for a week. She especially loved, and was proud of her 3 girls and 6 grandchildren. BeBe is survived by 3 daughters: Merry (Holland) & Steve Roberson, Greenville, SC, Marcia (Holland) & Jim Cherry, Vidalia, Ga., and Nancy (Holland) & Ben Young, Jr., Montgomery, Ala. ; 4 grandsons, 2 granddaughters, and 8 great-grands. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Betty Cross' Memory to Charleston Hat Ladies Scholarship Fund, c/o Archie Burkel, 805 Heyward Cove, Charleston, SC 29412; Putney Methodist Church, 1301 Dorough Ave, Albany, Ga. 31705; Vaughn Park Church of Christ, 3800 Vaughn Rd, Montgomery, Ala. 36106. Thank You Pam & George for your kind words. The burial & memorial were just as we planned on Jan. 12 & 13th. Did not know if us girls could make the plans work since we live in different states, and made plans in a different city. Momma is happy now being back in her Beloved Charleston. Betty B, as dad and us always called her, was like a second mom to me. We have called each other and have stayed in touch through the years....she has been so supportive of me through my treatments etc. I will see her again one day! I love you Betty B and miss you already.
