Betty Carter Obituary

Betty Carter SUMMERVILLE - Betty Ballentine Carter, 90, of Lake City, South Carolina, died Saturday, 26 August 2017, in her Summerville home. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00am Tuesday, 29 August 2017 in the chapel at The Villages, Summerville, South Carolina 201 West 9th North Street. A reception will immediately follow. Interment will be at 3:00pm Tuesday, 29 August 2017 at Lake City Memorial Park, 522 West Main Street, Lake City, South Carolina. Betty was born May 28, 1927, in Easley, South Carolina, to Vida and Louie Ballentine. She attended Furman University, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 1948 with a Bachelor's Degree in Music and went on to complete a Masters from the University of Colorado at Denver in Carl Orff Schulwerk. Betty believed strongly in the power of the arts in all forms as a necessary tool in the education and growth of the human spirit. She devoted her life to sharing her passion for the arts with others serving as the Organist and Choir Director for the Lake City Presbyterian Church for 44 years, as music teacher to generations of children, and as a community leader. She founded the Lake City Concert Series in 1989 bringing world-class arts to her community. Betty is survived by her husband of 69 years, William Clinton Carter, Jr.; three children, Dr. William C. Carter, III (Dorothy), Dr. H. Ballentine Carter (Lillian), and Sara E. Carter (Lori Goodwin); four grandchildren, Julia Carter, Dr. Louisa C. Staton (Evan), Abby Goodwin, and Harley Goodwin. She is also survived by two sisters, Mattie Ruth Stevens and Nancy Baker. The Family wishes to express their deep appreciation and grateful thanks to those who have helped them minister faithful and loving care to Betty: Shirley Howard, Deborah Smith, Peggy Palmer and also to the caring staff of Roper Hospice. Heart full of gratitude for her life and the impact of her life on mine. Praying the comfort and peace that only Jesus gives is given in loving abundance to Betty's family.
