Betty was a role model for me because of her laughter, candor, desire to continue her education despite her age, and desire to soak up all cultural opportunities with great joy and a mighty smile.
I was new to Walterboro in the fall of 1984. I remember meeting the ladies of the Aphrodite Fine Arts Club when my husband submitted some of my artwork to the community’s art show that its club annually sponsored. I was excited to win some ribbons!
In 1987, I became a Walterboro High School Visual Arts teacher and eventually, the only official Video Production teacher in our county. The ladies of the club were very supportive of my programs. I was delighted that many had been teachers themselves and I greatly appreciated their support.
I was fortunate to have joined the Aphrodite Fine Arts Club with many of Walterboro’s fabulous ladies as its members. The first program that I presented as a club member happened to be hosted by Betty in her home. I can still see her standing at the top of the front steps laughing as she called out to me, “Are you sure you’ve got that?” I was lugging a TV and VCR up those steps and into the house. The program was on Maya Angelou and I had created my video and handouts from all sorts of sources. I felt as though I had achieved the highest compliment possible when after my presentation, Betty Black told me how impressed she was. And we know that Betty always spoke her truth!
Betty you are most likely livening up Heaven by sharing your laughter as you attend any and all arts events and more. Thank you for being your true, fun self and a role model for me. Thank you, also, to Betty’s family for sharing her with all of us.

Dear Black family
Sending my most sincere condolences. It is with much sadness I read of your mother's passing. She sounds like such a delight just as you Johnny and Ben were to work with. May you find comfort in the joy I'm sure she brought.
Sincerely,
Kay Drummond
