As a gifted singer, she participated in numerous concerts of the Augusta Collegium Musicum and the Augusta Choral Society throughout the years. Mrs. Toole loved Augusta and was vitally interested in the things that have made Augusta a lively and beautiful city. She was admired for her floral arrangements and shared this gift with many. I loved Bertha! She always made me feel welcome and happy in her home. This year we made her famous Artichoke Pickle with artichokes that Robbie had grown. It took 2 days but was worth the effort. I think of her and Auntie Mary whenever we eat it. Bertha had a well lived life!

Dear Mr. Toole,

I am very sorry to hear about your wife. My deepest sympathies to you and your family. I remember meeting her at one of the St. Hilda's functions at the end of your tenure there. She was vivacious and outgoing. We missed you at the 60th anniversary last year, but remembered how much you touched our musical lives with Gilbert and Sullivan, chorus, and choir and of course, the Pageant I am still playing the cello in various chamber music groups, orchestra amd am taking lessons. Hopefully time will heal your heart and memories will bring you joy forever.

Dear Mr. Toole,
Please accept my condolences on Mrs. Toole's passing. I left a message at the house today, not realizing that the service was scheduled for today! My heart goes out to you and to Caroline and to my dear friend, Mary as you cope with this tremendous loss. I dedicated my performance in the "Lion King" tonight in the same way I always experienced Mrs. Toole: quietly, gracefully, gently, but with great warmth. I'll give a call soon to speak with you directly.

Dear Bill and all the Battey children
My heart is full of sadness at the loss of lovely Bertha. Just the other day I was reminiscing while looking at a photograph in my library taken at Bertha's house in 1996. Bertha and her first cousins, my mother, Frances Barrett Zimmerman, and her sister, Bertha Barrett Garrett, are with Natalie Lee, Marquin Barrett, my sister, Louise Z. Austell, and her daughter, Elizabeth A. Allen, and me prior to a wedding party for Elizabeth. I mention this not only because I longingly looked at the photo and thought of my love for each person, but because Bertha was always so gracious to everyone, and especially to family who no longer live in Augusta but still hold it dear.
Bertha's talents contributed greatly to the betterment of Augusta; she was a person of beautiful countenance and innate refinement. I shall miss her very much and wish that I could be in Augusta for her service, but I shall hold her memory in my heart always. My sympathy to each for your great loss. May the Lord's peace that passes all understanding comfort you.

I had the pleasure and gift in life of being able to share (while a music student at Augusta State) the joys of being welcomed into the hearts and home of Bill and Bertha Toole. She was a beauitful person in and out who loved life and was also a pretty good tennis player. One day she whipped me on the court and barely had to move from side to side. it's all about placement!

God bless the whole family! Heaven has truly gained another saint.

With much love!

Dear Cousin Bill and the entire family,

I am so very sorry. And as my mother, Maggie, and I recall even Bertha used to say, I need to "collect my thoughts" to say nothing of my emotions, about not only a truly huge figure from my childhood but also an influence on my entire life, not too mention many cherished memories with the whole family. But I will mail you a note soon.

Love, Derek Scheips

Bill and all the Battey children,
I am very sad to hear of Bertha's death but rejoice in the long, wonderful and fruitful life she lived. Our family loved her - such a gracious lady - and I'll always remember when Bill and Bertha came to Columbus to visit Mother several years ago. I also had a great visit with her and some of you following Natalie's service. I wish I could be there to see you all on Wednesday and renew acquaintances with some of you. We need to keep in touch. With much love and sympathy,
