Bernice Sligh Obituary

SLIGH, Bernice COLUMBIA - Graveside service for Bernice Haselden Sligh, 96, will be held Monday, February 16, 2009 at 1 p.m. in Elmwood Cemetery. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Mrs. Sligh, wife of Hugh Lee Sligh, died Saturday, February 14, 2009, after a brief illness. She was born in Florence, to Clarence Fred and Annie Powell Haselden April 25, 1912. She treasured her young years on Coit Street with her siblings Charles, Jay, and Alton Haselden. After high school, she received a business degree from WCUNC in Greensboro, NC and returned home to work in the law firm of Lucas and Co. She married Hugh Lee Sligh, a dashing executive twelve years her senior. Hugh was an avid outdoorsman and always high gun. She quickly became an expert at preparing dove, duck, quail and bream. After moving to Columbia, she joined Shandon Baptist Church where Hugh's parents were one of the twelve charter member couples. She was a dedicated member for fifty-six years. She built three houses: Madison Ave in Florence, Adger Rd in Columbia and Pawley's Island. She knew how to make these nurturing homes with priceless memories. Known to many as Bunny, she endeared herself to all who knew her with her deep interest in, and love of others. She was always the most requested chaperone by her daughters' friends for dances and house parties. She said that she drove an old car because when it broke down, she met the nicest people. These encounters would always produce lifelong friendships. She was a loving mother to Anne and Lucille. But the highlight of her life was her five grandchildren, Caroline, Willis, Lee, Childs and Brooks. Surviving are daughters, Anne Sligh Tigner of Charleston and Lucille Sligh Cantey (Mrs. James W. Cantey, Jr.) of Columbia; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank her caregivers, Carol Evanson and Gwen Dunn. Memorials may be made to Shandon Baptist Church or the Humane Society, 121 Humane Ln., Columbia, SC 29209 Please sign online guest book at www.dunbarfunerals.com. Lucille and Anne, I was so sorry to hear of Aunt Bunny's passing. We had kept in touch for a long time until I moved, and I couldn't find her. We lost Mama last January, a year ago. My love to all, I still miss Daddy AC so much. I still ride by the Haseldon plot in mt. Hope. They were a very special family. Love and prayers to you both, Edrie(Cooter) Willis Truluck

Your mother was a wonderful Christian Lady and a true Southern Lady. I will always remember our Monday lunches. She was a regular at my morning devotions. Always willing to take part. I wish I had known her in her earlier years. My prayers and thoughts are with the family during this time of great lost. But, at the same time, I thank God that she is now home. May God bless you.

Bunny was a remarkable Christian lady. She always showed interest and concern for my daughter in Kenya. "Now how is Linda doing?" She would stand and look very intently at me, waiting for my answer. She was interested in all of us. She showed her love and lived her faith. Her face would always light up when she spoke of her "girls."

You don't need for me to say that Bunny was a great cook. She mentioned a tomato pie and I was lucky enough to be in the group who had never eaten it. You would know that she made a tomato pie for us. It was delicious, of course.

I'm thankful that I had the opportunity to know Bunny. She was truly "one of a kind." I can imagine God saying, "yes, one of my best creations." Heaven is better with her there, but you know that, you who loved her best. With my prayers, Nola
