Bernice Bernstein Obituary

BERNSTEIN, Bernice Bernice Rudich Bernstein, widow of Maurice Tiny Bernstein, passed away on Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at Roper Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Graveside funeral services will be held on Friday, June 29, at 10:00 A.M. at Synagogue Emanu-El's Maryville Cemetery on Magnolia Road. The family will receive visitors following the services and will sit Shiva (week-long period of mourning) at 1844 Banbury Road off Hwy. 61 in the Forest Lakes Subdivision from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM and after 6:30 PM. Bernice was born on July 23, 1926, in Charleston, a daughter of the late Joseph Max and Bertha Kurtz Rudich. Following graduation from Murray High School, she worked at the Charleston Navy Base and for Buckley and Bailey Law Offices before giving up her job to devote her life to taking care of her family. She was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother who cared first and foremost about her husband, children, and grandsons. In her later years, Bernice loved playing bingo and walking around Citadel Mall. She was a loyal member of Synagogue Emanu-El who attended services daily and who was the chairperson of Hazak (the 50 Plus Club). She was predeceased by Maurice Bernstein, her husband of 55 years; Howard Bernstein, her son; Michael Rudich, her brother; and Rita Rudich Sonntag, her sister. Survivors include her devoted daughters and their husbands, Marcia and Sid Shealey and Faye and Dane Schupbach; her two precious grandsons Jason Shealey and Kevin Shealey; her sister and brother-in-law Pearl and Warren Hyman; her brother and sister-in-law Leon and Jean Rudich; and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Synagogue Emanu-El, 5 Windsor Drive, Charleston, SC 29407. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Marcia and Faye and family,

Word has just reached us about your mother's passing and we were saddened to learn about it. She and your father were such mainstays of the congregation while we were in Charleston and were always so supportive of every activity. She was a sweet lady. We are so sorry to learn that she has passed on. Our thoughts are with you and we pray that the Almighty may comfort you among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

Marcia,

I have many memories of your mother from my days at Addlestone Hebrew Academy. The one thing I always remember is what a wonderful grandmother she was to Jason and Kevin. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
