Bernard Nettles Obituary

Bernard Nettles MT. PLEASANT - Bernard (Bernie) Oliver Nettles, 89, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., husband of Jane B. Nettles, entered into eternal rest on May 7, 2024. His memorial service will be held Thursday, May 16, 2024, at 2:00 pm at Grace Church Cathedral Columbarium, 98 Wentworth Street, Charleston, S.C. Bernie was born in Charleston, S.C., son of the late Oliver and Irene Nettles. He graduated from St. Andrews High School and The Citadel (Class of 1960) with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and was a member of the Citadel Honor Court. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and retired from SPAWAR. Bernie was very active in the community serving as President of the Kiwanis Club of Charleston, Carolinas District Governor for North Carolina and South Carolina, President of the Carolinas District Kiwanis Foundation, Counselor and Secretary for SCORE and Commodore of the Hobcaw Yacht Club. He was a life member of Kiwanis International and of the Legion of Honor from Kiwanis International; he was presented the Distinguished International Governors Award. Bernie always enjoyed supporting youth whether it be tutoring and mentoring in the public elementary schools, working with the Boy Scouts and serving on the Boy Scouts Executive Board or teaching Sunday school to youths. He was best known as a champion of children as the former Chairman of the Kiwanis Club of Charleston Terrific Kids Program. Bernie was a man with a deep, quiet faith and was a past Vestryman of Grace Church. He was a hard worker, loved his family and friends. He loved sailing and will always be remembered for his warm and wonderful smile. He will be greatly missed by all who crossed his path. Bernie is survived by his wife, Jane; sons, Steven Nettles (Ellen) of NY, Richard Nettles (Kim), and Timothy Nettles of Charleston, SC; nieces, Lynn Percival (Joel) of UT, Deborah Fisher (Larry Haigh) of WA; and one granddaughter, Molly Sara Nettles. He is predeceased by his parents and sister, Novella Fisher.

So sorry for all the Nettles family. I have so many fond memories of time spent in your home. Bernie was such a fine person, and I am honored to have known him.
