Berkeley Hauser Obituary

HAUSER, Berkeley Berkeley Baldwin Hauser of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., returned to the Lord on the afternoon of April 1, 2009. Born in Washington, D.C., she was the first child of Ernest and Mabel Baldwin of Arlington, Virginia. Mrs. Hauser was raised in Arlington and was a graduate of Washington and Lee High School. With her striking red hair and vivacious personality she was a natural performer, and was always attracted to the stage. After high school, she set off for New York and attended drama school for two years, but her stage career was derailed by the war. During World War II she worked in Washington and New York for the New Zealand legation, and travelled from coast to coast on their behalf. At war's end she wed Franklin J. Hauser of Englewood, New Jersey. In the early days of television they founded and operated the Columbia School of Broadcasting in New York and Los Angeles. Following her husband's death in 1975, Mrs. Hauser relocated from New Jersey to Mt. Pleasant. A life-long lover of the beach, she could often be found walking the beach or swimming at Sullivan's Island. She was active in the Charleston community until very recently, participating in amateur theatricals, shrimping, and serving as a docent at the Nathaniel Russell House. She always enjoyed animals and wildlife, and for over 20 years was accompanied by her beloved parrot, P.B., who even went with her on road trips to the Georgia mountains and the occasional hurricane evacuation. Mrs. Hauser was a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Charleston, and worked several years in the Christian Science Reading Room. Mrs. Hauser was the loving sister of the late Ernest G. Baldwin, Jr., of James Island. She is survived by two nephews, Ernest G. Baldwin III, of Fairfax, VA, and George L. Baldwin of Summerville. Donations to Heifer International www.heifer.org or to Pet Helpers of Mt. Pleasant www.pethelpers.org are welcomed. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.
