Bennett Denemark CHARLESTON - Bennett Goldsmith Denemark, 83, husband of Marlene Weitz Denemark, passed away Monday, February 27, 2023, at East Cooper Medical Center in Mt. Pleasant, SC. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Isidore Denemark and Gladys Goldsmith Denemark. Bennett graduated from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where he met and later married, Roslyn Goldberg Denemark. Bennett and Roz moved to Sumter shortly after their marriage, where he went to work for Coca-Cola Bottling and later Sumter Dairies. After a successful career as an Accountant, he opened Sumter Small Engine, Inc. in 1976. He cherished his role as a Father and loving Husband to Roz. He was a dedicated Business Owner who cherished his customers. He was a Member of the Sunset Country Club, Lions Club, Elks Club, and the Sumter Jaycees. He loved cars, dancing, music, being with friends, and going out in Sumter. He was devasted in 2007 when his beloved Roz lost her battle with Cancer. Bennett was blessed when he met and later married Marlene Weitz of Charleston. After years in Sumter, a move to the Low Country became necessary due to declining health. He will be remembered as a dedicated Husband, Father, and Grandfather (Poppie). Surviving are his wife, Marlene, of Charleston; a son, Stephen Denemark (Townes) and their two children, Landon and Reid; two daughters, Jodie Umberger (Mike) and Sharon Altman (Tim); a step-son, Jonathan Weitz (Lisa), children, Jessica and Jonathan; and two step-daughters, Julie Marquez (Anthony), children, Lauren, Jeremy, Ryan and June Weitz. Sister, Adelle (Sammy) Abrams; Sister-in-law, Linda (Jerry) Wearb; Brother-in-law, Stanley (Bryna) Goldberg; and numerous Nieces and Nephews. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude for the amazing care provided by Alanna Herndon, Kanithia Dean, and Justin Nichols. Graveside services will be held at 11 A.M. Friday, March 3, in the Sumter Jewish Cemetery, 700 West Oakland Drive, Sumter, SC, with Rabbi Joseph Germain officiating. The family will receive friends following the graveside service.
