THE TRUE GENTLEMAN is the man whose conduct proceeds from goodwill and an acute sense of propriety, and whose self-control is equal to all emergencies; who does not make the poor man conscious of his poverty, the obscure man of his obscurity, or any man of his inferiority or deformity; who is himself humbled if necessity compels him to humble another; who does not flatter wealth, cringe before power, or boast of his own possessions or achievements; who speaks with frankness but always with sincerity and sympathy; whose deed follows his word; who thinks of the rights and feelings of others, rather than his own; and who appears well in any company, and man with whom honor is sacred and virtue safe.

I was lucky to have gotten to know Ben during my times in Charleston and while he was dating my good friend Mignonne. He is one of the kindest, most thoughtful, entertaining people that I have met. He had a genuine passion for life, and he shared that with everyone he encountered. You could tell that just by having one conversation with him. My most sincere and heartfelt compassion and prayers go out to the Burris family, Mignonne, and all of Ben’s friends.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Burris and Family,
I heard about this fairly late, being so far away, but I'm compelled to send you my most heartfelt condolences.
I lost touch with Ben over the years, but he was an integral part in much of my life. Many of my earliest memories are of birthday parties, baseball games, and play dates with Ben. I find myself quite shaken by the news of his death.
All I feel that I can say is that I hope we can learn from this and always strive do whatever it takes to insure that other parents or dear friends will never have to suffer the immeasurable loss being felt right now by so many over the loss of Ben.
My heart truly goes out to you all. I wish you all the strength and all the hope necessary to honor the memory of Ben while never taking for granted those you still have by your side.
My most heartfelt sympathies,
Robert O. Maguire, Jr.

Dear Family and Mignonne,
I am so sorry to hear this tragic news about sweet Ben. I am a dear friend of Mignonne. I met Ben about a year ago in Charleston. Ben was one of the most genuine and fun loving people I have ever met and he will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. He will not be forgotten.
Death is nothing at all - I have only slipped away into the next room. Whatever we were to each other, that we are still. Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Laugh as we always laughed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without effort. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was; there is absolutely unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of your mind because I am out of your sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near just around the corner. All is well. Nothing is past; nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before - only better, infinitely happier and forever - we will all be one together with Christ.
