Belton Workman Obituary

Dr. Belton James Workman, Jr. MT. PLEASANT - Dr. Belton James Workman, Jr. passed away peacefully at Somerby of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, on July 2nd, 2014. He was born March 20, 1925, in Woodruff, South Carolina. Living his entire life in Woodruff, with the exception of school and military service, he and his wife, Emmie, moved to Mount Pleasant six years ago to be near their daughter, Paula. He was the only son of the late Dr. Belton James Workman, Sr. and the late Pauline Wingo Workman of Woodruff, S.C. "Dr. Bud" graduated from Woodruff High School, The Citadel class of 1946, and Medical College of South Carolina class of 1948. Dr. Bud entered the Navy as an officer and served in the Korean War. Due to medical staffing needs, he was transferred to the Marine Corps where he served a few miles behind the front line for one year as a Physician. After completing his service in the military, he completed his residency in General Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine, in 1956. Following discharge and graduation, he returned to Woodruff where he practiced medicine with his father, "Dr. Belt" at the Workman Memorial Hospital for 32 years. Dr. Bud was one of eight Workman physicians that practiced medicine in Woodruff and surrounding communities, prompting each to be referred to by their first name such as "Dr. Bud". He was a 50 year member of the Woodruff Rotary Club as well as numerous medical affiliations. He has finally returned home to his town of Woodruff and its beloved people. Dr. Bud was predeceased by his parents, step-mother, Kathryn Bruton Workman, sisters, Elizabeth Workman Maxwell, Margaret Workman Hudson, and the Honorable Katherine Anne Workman. Dr. Bud is survived by his wife of 63 years, Emmie Jewell Workman; sons, Belton James Workman III (Sandra), of Atlanta Georgia, Frankie Meyer Workman of Columbia, South Carolina; and daughter, Pauline Wingo Workman (Jan Harbison) of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina; grandchildren, Caroline Emmie Workman, YN2 (IDW), Jonathan Meyer Workman (stationed in Japan), Keri Berger (Scott), and Stacey Marshall (Chris); great-grandchildren, Evan, Leo, Jacob, Mason, and Max. Family and friends are invited to attend a receiving on Sunday, July 6th at Forest Hills Funeral Home in Woodruff from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. A Funeral service will be held on Monday, July 7th at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Woodruff. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Helping Hands Ministries of Woodruff. The family extends special thanks to the staff of Somerby of Mt. Dear Emmy , Buddy, Frankie and Paula,
I was so saddened by the news of Dr. Bud's passing.
He was my doctor growing up in Woodruff and I loved him so much. I have fond memories of my Dad and Mom with both families growing up. Woodruff was a better place because of him.

Hi there. My name is Lauren. I am the granddaughter of Charles Boyd Culbertson, 92. My grandfather wanted to attend the funeral but is unable to do so due to health reasons. He has thought about you and your family all week with a heavy heart. My grandfather says that he and Mr. Belton lived across the street from each other in Woodruff and that they grew up together. I was very sad to hear about Dr. Bud. He and Dr. Belt were so special to our family, as were each one of you. I have many fond memories of us sledding down the little hill in our back yard and finally stopping either in your yard or the Stinson's yard. Y'all seemed more like family than back door neighbors.
