Barbara Polk Obituary

POLK, Barbara Entered into eternal rest on the morning of March 19, 2007, Barbara Alward Polk, widow of Gaston Junie Lang Polk, Jr. Most recently, her residence was at Seabrook Assisted Living in Hilton Head and was formerly of Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral services Friday, March 21, 2008 at two o'clock in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. Interment, Bethany Cemetery. Friends may call at Stuhr's Downtown Chapel Thursday between six and eight o'clock. Mrs. Polk was born January 14, 1924 in Flint, Michigan, the daughter of Ernie Everett Alward and Phoebe Chapman. She graduated in 1942 from Montreat Jr. College and in 1944 from The College of Charleston, where she received a BS degree in Chemistry. She remained an active Alumnus and was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. She was an assistant librarian with Charleston County, a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, and a volunteer with Roper Hospital. Mrs. Polk was an active member of John Wesley Methodist Church, where she and her husband were avid square dancers with the Wesley Wheelers. Upon her move to Hilton Head, she became a member of St. Andrews by the Sea. Mrs. Polk was a beloved Mother and a true friend to many. She is survived by one son, Gregory W. Polk and his wife Barbara of Atlanta, GA; one daughter, Nanci P. Weckhorst and her husband Jerre of Hilton Head, SC; one sister, Joan A. Ball and her husband of Ed of Mt. Pleasant, SC; three grandchildren, Chad, Everett and Megan; three great grandchildren, Ethan, Nate and William. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to John Wesley United Methodist Church, 626 Savannah Hwy., Charleston, SC 29407 or Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, PO Box 3827, Bluffton, SC 29910.
