Barbara Frampton Obituary

Barbara Lou Kalber Frampton HARTSVILLE, SC - Barbara Lou Kalber Frampton died Wednesday, November 19, 2014. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 22, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church of Hartsville, SC. The Rev. Dr. Dan Sansbury will officiate and the family will receive friends following the service in the narthex. Brown-Pennington-Atkins is serving the family. Barbara was born June 7, 1917 in Hartsville, SC, the daughter of the late Carrie Lee Erwin Kalber and Gustave Adam Kalber. She was educated in the Hartsville public schools where she excelled in sports and academics. She graduated from Hartsville High School as Valedictorian and particularly enjoyed diving, swimming, basketball and tennis. In 1938, she graduated first in her class from Coker College. After graduation from Coker, she completed the coursework for a Master's Degree in English Literature at Duke University, then returned to Hartsville to marry her childhood sweetheart, Harry Hastings Frampton, Jr. They had a loving marriage for 67 years. Barbara taught English at Dillon High School for three years and for many years at Hartsville High School, where she was loved by her students for her creative teaching methods and sense of fun. Barbara was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Hartsville, but moved her membership to the First Presbyterian Church when she married. At First Presbyterian Church she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was a member of Prestwood Country Club, the Hartsville Cotillion and Hartsville Country Club and served as a Trustee of Coker College. She served as a Girl Scout leader and sponsor of the high school cheerleading team. With her family and many dear friends she shared her love of tennis, golf, swimming, dancing and games of any kind. Throughout her life, she was an avid reader with an interest in current affairs as well as a love of literature. Surviving are her three children, Harry Hastings Frampton, III of Vail, CO, Carrie Frampton Thompson of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Bib Frampton Willis of Quincy, CA; seven grandchildren, Christopher Edgar Frampton, Matthew Hastings Frampton, David Erwin Thompson, Harry Frampton Thompson, Barbara Kalber Moses, Ryan Frampton Willis, and Tahlah Lou Willis; and five great-grandchildren: Charlotte Bray Frampton, Margaret Elise Frampton, Harry Hastings Frampton, IV, Bennett Frampton Moses and Elizabeth Hastings Moses. Known affectionately by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as "Ba Ba," she will be dearly missed by all who knew her. She will be remembered for her zest for life, her good sportsmanship and her love for teaching, which she exhibited whether teaching her students how to understand "Julius Caesar" or her children, grandchildren and their friends how to swim, dive, ride bikes, crab, play card games or serve a tennis ball. She played tennis and bicycled until her early 80's and particularly enjoyed her retirement years at Fripp Island, SC, where she and her husband Harry had a beach house. The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Savannah Grace at the Palms for their love and care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gustave Adam Kalber Scholarship Fund of Coker College, 300 East College Avenue, Hartsville, SC 29550 or to First Presbyterian Church, 213 West Home Avenue, Hartsville, SC 29550.
