Barbara Ann Stroupe Elliott MT. PLEASANT - Barbara Ann Stroupe Elliott of Mount Pleasant passed away peacefully on March 12, 2015 at Hospice of Charleston, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. She was born October 25, 1937 in Hendersonville, South Carolina, and was the only child of the late Pauline Woods Stroupe and Hughes Warren Stroupe. She married John Dewey Elliott on January 28, 1961, at First Baptist Church in Walterboro, South Carolina. Barbara attended Hendersonville High School and went on to college at Furman University in 1955. She then transferred to the University of South Carolina in Columbia in the spring of 1956. She earned ASCPT certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and began her career at McLeod Memorial in Florence, South Carolina in 1958. She later moved to Walterboro, South Carolina to work as a Medical Technologist in the local hospital. This is where she met and fell in love with her lifelong mate, John Dewey Elliott. As a devoted wife and mother of three young girls, the couple moved around the country to follow her husband's advancing career. After years of promotions and relocations, the couple landed in Valdosta, Georgia in the spring of 1974. Barbara and John became members of Park Avenue United Methodist Church, where Barbara became an integral part of the leadership of the church. She sang in the choir, organized committees, led fundraising drives, and capital campaigns. Barbara was also affiliated with many philanthropic organizations in Valdosta: including the local soup kitchen, March of Dimes, the Crescent Historical Society, and the Valdosta Garden Club. Barbara held both the position of Vice President and President of the Club during her years of membership. She was also a certified National Flower Show Judge. She won numerous awards on the local and state level for floral arrangement and design. In 1991, Barbara went back to school and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from Valdosta State University with honors. She worked as a floor nurse at Valdosta Memorial Hospital. Among the things Barbara loved most was traveling internationally with her husband. In 2000, Barbara and John moved to Mount Pleasant, South Carolina to retire and be closer to home and family. Barbara is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, John Dewey Elliott of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. She is survived by three daughters: Gwendolyn Elliott Wise and her husband Matthew Wise of Greenville, South Carolina, Monica Elliott Hudgens and her husband Dr. Eddie Hudgens of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, and Johnna Elliott Feild and her husband Martin Feild of Atlanta, Georgia. There are eight grandchildren: Parker, Jackson, and Julianne Wise of Greenville, South Carolina, Annie and Courtney Hudgens of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, and Tyler, Samantha, and Sarah Feild of Atlanta, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her brother in-law, Kelly Joe Elliott of Loris, South Carolina. She is also survived by her aunt, Evelyn Woods Walker of North Charleston, South Carolina, her uncle, Harold Woods of Yemassee, South Carolina, her aunt, Lois Woods of Walterboro, South Carolina her sister-in-law, Sarah Floyd Elliott of Murrell's Inlet, South Carolina, her niece, Kelly Elliott Delk, her nephew, Kinn Elliott, of Columbia, South Carolina, and many beloved cousins. The family will receive visitors at Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home, Walterboro, South Carolina at 1:00pm until 2:30pm on Saturday, March 14, 2015. Immediately following the visitation, the service will begin in the funeral home Chapel at 2:30pm. The graveside services will follow at Black Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Hendersonville, South Carolina.
