Barbara Budan Obituary

Barbara Elizabeth Gates Budan CHARLESTON - It is with great sadness we are sharing the passing of Barbara Elizabeth Gates Budan (Mimi), peacefully in her sleep at her home in Charleston on April 17, 2023. Mother, daughter, sister, wife. Grandmother (and great!), and beloved friend to many. Born on January 18, 1945 in Painesville, Ohio to Frederick and June Caldwell Gates, Barbara was preceded in death by her dear husband, William Kenneth Budan, and her parents, as well as her brother, Theodore Caldwell Gates. Barbara is survived by her children, Michael Frederick Budan (Peggy) of South Carolina, John Philip Budan of Tennessee and Susan Elizabeth Budan Kampmeyer (James) of South Carolina, and their children, Michael Jr. and Mckenzie, Ellery and Jackson, and James and Anna, as well as her siblings, Judith Gates Wilt of Florida, Richard Gates of Ohio and Roger Gates of Illinois. She is also survived by her three great-grandchildren, Oliver, Sullivan and Georgia. Barbara's joy was the relationships and friendships she cherished, honored and maintained throughout her rich life. It's the love we share that makes life what it is. She understood and embraced this well. Any opportunity to help and bring positivity, love and forgiveness to the people in her life was welcomed. Her life was filled with engagement. Barbara was an active participant in various local civic and community groups. She was a lover of the sun and the great outdoors, enjoying tennis, hiking, swimming and gardening, as well as being an avid painter, artist, designer and decorator. Her membership and participation in the Christian Science Church was especially important, and she maintained her active status as a reader and Reading Room facilitator. This life is a splendid mystery, embraced by the wise with a spirit of enthusiasm and curiosity. The time spent with Barbara exemplified this, and she will be cherished and remembered as her travels into the Infinite continue, unseen, and undoubtedly filled with the same indefatigable positivity and appreciation she brought to her life and all those in it. You will be greatly missed here, Barbara, Mom, Mimi. We love you so. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday June 10, 2023. Location and details will be shared at a future time. Contributions to the D.A.V.(Disabled American Veterans) or to your favorite plant a tree organization would be appreciated! Or literally, plant a tree. Barb would love this! From our first meeting in junior high, Barb & I became "sister/friends". We both moved to Bainbridge, Ohio. Separated by only a couple of miles, we spent lots of time together, always in non-stop philosophical conversations! (Deep!)
We each had three children and our two families were so close as we grew up together.
These wonderful times together were shared in annual Christmas
letters shared by our group of eight and this group of highschool gal pals gathered together for week-long reunions every few years during our entire lives! We are all blessed by these times and the memories we all still share.
"We can´t see you now Barb but we still feel your spirit and hear your thoughts!!! You will always be so Loved!"

I am shocked and saddened to read of Barbara's passing. We were tennis friends in Keowee Key but continued our friendship afterwards. I had to go to Charleston for a medical procedure. Barbara invited me to stay with her. She gave me her bed while she slept on the couch. We shared a wonderful meal at her favorite restaurant. Rest In Peace, dear sweet Barbara.

Susan, Mike and John,
Nothing anyone can say will take away the pain you´re experiencing. I hope you can look back on your precious memories and know that her amazing personality lives on through all of you. Lean on those memories to remind you of the joy she brought to so many.
It was such a privilege to have her in my life.
Sending you all good thoughts of special angels on your shoulders.

Susan, Michael, John and family, I am very saddened to learn of Barbara´s passing. She was one of the kindest, talented, generous, and easy going persons I had the pleasure to call friend. She was a one of a kind. I know you must be feeling a very tremendous loss that seems unimaginable. I pray you will all be given the strength and peace you need to see you through. Keep her memories tucked deep in your hearts. I surely will. I loved painting and traveling with her. I will never forget our New York City trip in 2007. She was just so special.

I am so sorry and so sadden for the loss of your mother, grandma, sister, and my dear, dear friend of over 65 years. She was such a wonderful, knowledgeable lady. I used to tell her all the time "Barb, you're 'so deep' I can't follow you. You're to deep" We would laugh. She was 'so deep' in her thoughts and expressions. She always had the answers too. Our last conversation was about her coming up north 'home' for our 60th class reunion and she was going to stay here at my house along with a couple more of our girlfriends from out of town. I just don't know what to say. I am so sorry, so very sorry. How we all loved Barb. Sherry 'Krauss' Lorek

Pictures from a long time ago. First one was our 40th high school reunion in 2003. second picture is Barb's graduation pic from 1963. Third picture is Barb and I -maybe 2003 and the last picture is Barb and I in 1992, it was our first (of many) trips away with 'the high school girls.' Oh how we'll miss you Barb.

Barbara Budan was an amazing woman. I was fortunate enough to know her during my teenage years and learned a great deal from her. I later thought how she was parallel to Martha Stewart on so many levels. She was a fabulous cook, amazing gardner, wonderful decorator, devoted wife, and a loving mother. She exposed me to a world of class and culture and helped nurture me into a better person. I will be forever thankful for the impact she and her entire family had on my life.

What a privilege to have such a loving sister. Our love and deep friendship are forever but I will miss her dearly. Wanted to include this beautiful picture taken in 2015 with her two oldest grandsons Jack Budan and James Kampmeyer. She was blessed to have 6 beautiful grandchildren and three great grandchildren who she loved and treasured more than anything. My deepest sympathy to her dear children- Susan, Mike and Susan. We will all be keeping her in our memory forever.
