Banks McFadden Obituary

MCFADDEN, Banks James Banks McFadden, 88, of Clemson, SC, died Saturday, June 4, 2005, at the home of one of his daughters, Lil Arrants, in Ormond Beach, FL. He was born in Fort Lawn, SC, on February 7, 1917, the son of the late James Bissel and Azubah Agnew McFadden. After graduating from Great Falls High School in 1936, Banks attended Clemson University where he earned All-American honors in football and basketball. Following graduation from Clemson, he was drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers and played one year of professional football. He then served three years in the European theater with the Army Air Corps during World War II. Following the war, Banks married the "love of his life," Agnes (Aggie) Rigby of Manning, SC, and returned to his beloved Clemson where they made their home and he began his coaching career which spanned 26 years. The final 15 years of his service to Clemson were spent as Director of the Intramural Department. For many years, he was an active member of the Clemson community and the Clemson United Methodist Church. Banks was predeceased by his wife, Aggie; three sisters, Elizabeth McFadden Settle, Gill McFadden Reese, and Doris McFadden Sim; half-brother, Tom Wallace; and half-sister, Isabel Wallace. He is survived by four devoted daughters, Patsy Harlow and her husband, Dave, of Durham, NC, Lil Arrants and her husband, Jack, of Ormond Beach, FL, Marcia Barrett and her husband, Bob, of Florence, SC, and Jan Parmley and her husband, Rick, of Lake Wylie, SC; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Although Banks will be remembered by many for his outstanding athletic abilities and accomplishments, his family and friends will best remember him as a humble man with a wonderful sense of humor and a kind and generous heart who loved life and his fellow man. Graveside services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m., on Cemetery Hill, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m., at the First Baptist Church of Clemson. Reception will follow at the McFadden Building on the Clemson campus. Visitation will be held Friday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Banks McFadden Scholarship Fund, c/o IPTAY, Clemson University, PO Box 1529, Clemson, SC 29633; Hospice of Volusia Flagler County, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129; Clemson United Methodist Church, 195 Old Greenville Hwy., Clemson, SC 29631. Dear Coach McFadden's Daughters:

I am deeply grieving with you with the passing of your Daddy. He was a true legend in the history of Clemson Athletics. But he was always willing to offer a hand to me whther it be encouragement or sympathy or counsel regarding the plight of women athlectics on campus. He had an understanding of women as he reminded me because he had four daughters. And I knew Aggie was the sweetest lady in Clemson. His death marks the end of an era of the 'old guard,' with Frank Howard, Bob Bradley, Col. Robbins, Frank Jervey. These men were in their own way legends at Clemson. And I know Coach McFadden will be playing and directing games in the skies above. He was a genuine sweetheart of a man with a Clemson soul.

With honor, dignity, and respect,
