Avery Leroy "Lucky" Howard Charleston - Avery Leroy "Lucky" Howard, 90, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Gloria Norris Howard entered into eternal rest Sunday, May 22, 2016. His funeral service will be held Sunday May 29, 2016 in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway at 2:00 p.m. Interment with military honors will follow in Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Sunday in Stuhr's West Ashley Chapel one hour prior to the service. Avery was born November 16, 1925 in Elliott County, Sandy Hook, Kentucky, son of the late William G. Howard and Florence Howard. He was a veteran of the US Navy where he served during WWII. Avery retired from SCE&G after 34 years of service as a mechanic. He was a member of The American Legion Post 0179, and Ashley River Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Gloria Howard of Charleston, SC; three daughters, Barbara Ann Howard Hardwick of James Island, SC, Mary Alice Howard Aikman of Indianapolis, IN, and Norma Jean Howard Field (Chris) of Charleston, SC; daughter-in-law, Cathy Howard of Cottageville, SC; two step-daughters, Deborah Smith Knight (Roger), and Carol Smith Heissenbuttle both of Charleston, SC; three sisters,Virginia H. Evans of Arlington, TX, Joan H. Upchurch of Nashville, TN, and Madeline H. Adkins of Sandy Hook, KY; brother, Billy Howard; four grandchildren, Emily Knight Shier (Matthew), Jenna Leigh Heissenbuttle, Christopher Joseph Field, II., James Donald Field, II., and extended family, Allen Moyer, Bryan Moyer (Amber) and Craig Moyer. Avery is predeceased by son, Avery L. Howard, Jr., daughter, Betty Ruth Howard Tucker, son, William Avery "Lucky" Howard, four brothers, and three sisters. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ashley River Baptist Church, 1101 Savannah Hwy. Charleston, SC 29407. So, so sorry for the loss of your husband and father! He was such a kind and gentle man. I will miss his hugs and kisses at each family gathering and despite the loss of Howie's physical presence, his spirit is alive and will remain in our hearts and minds forever.
