Augustus Martin Obituary

Augustus C. Martin LADSON - The Honorable Augustus Christian Martin, 68, of Ladson, South Carolina, entered into eternal rest Friday, February 15, 2013. Born July 29, 1944 in Macungie, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Edward H. Martin and the late Jennie M. Hammond. After graduating from Emmaus High School, Mr. Martin enlisted in the United States Navy and served more than seven years on active duty in the submarine service. After leaving the Navy, Mr. Martin obtained an Associate Degree in Electrical/Electronics Technology from Penn State University and began a 32-year career with Pennsylvania Power & Light Company in 1970. During his career at PP&L he attended night school and received a B.A. in Economics from Lafayette College, an M.B.A. from Lehigh University, and a J.D. from Temple University. He received his Professional Engineer's License in 1977 and was admitted to the Bar in 1986. After admission, Mr. Martin was actively involved in Bar Association activities, including serving as President of the Bar Association of Lehigh County. Mr. Martin was the first corporate counsel to serve as President and believed that all lawyers, regardless of their employment, should not only support, but also be involved in bar association activities to ensure high ethical and professional standards. A dynamic advocate for the local community, Mr. Martin served as a member and president of the East Penn School Board and as well as a trustee, vice chairman and chairman of the Lehigh Carbon Community College Board. He also served as Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troup 71 in Macungie, PA. Known to family and friends as "Gus," he traveled to Japan many times over the last 20 years to study the martial art of ninjustu. Having achieved the level of 13th dan, he studied the art from the perspective of a multi-dimensional professional background. He helped many other students see the value of using ninjutsu as a basis for self-development by applying tenets of the art to a broader spectrum of life. He is survived by his daughter, Kim Martin Korda and her husband, Peter, of Larchmont, New York, two sons, Andrew C. Martin and his wife, Margaret, of Alexandria, Virginia, and Jonathan R. Martin and his wife, Denise, of Bordentown, New Jersey. Five grandchildren; Samantha, Alexander, Cara, Jessica, Isabella, a sister, Betty, and four brothers, Ed, Bob, Jim, and his twin brother, Ben. Gus will be missed by a large, extended family and by many friends and colleagues. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, 23 February 2013, in the Schantz Funeral Home, P.C., 250 Main Street, Emmaus, Pennsylvania at 12:00pm. The family will receive friends from 11:00am - 12:00pm in Schantz Funeral Home on the day of the service. Inurnment will follow at a later date. I served on the East Penn School Board with Gus , and I thought it important that people know his legacy on the board. He was the architect of changing the grade structure from a junior high and high school to a middle school and high school. This kept the high school where it was and allowed us to build a middle school instead.
He was a great man.

I worked with Gus at PPL many years ago. He was truly a gentleman, and a gentle soul. He was quick with a smile, an encouraging word or a listening ear. His insights were incredibly accurate, and his style was always non-threatening. I enjoyed our conversations and valued his opinion. He will be missed. I am so sorry for your loss. This world has lost a great man, but he definitely made the world a better place. Peace, my friend.

To all of Gus' family: I had the great pleasure to work with Gus just briefly in 2009. It was easy to quickly identify his quiet intelligence, keen insight, and unassuming sense of accomplishment. I appreciated the steadiness of his manner as well as his good sense of judgment and humor. Working with him made even the very long commute to work worthwhile. I valued the continuing friendship with him after our brief time working together. With his passing, this world has one less gentle soul and he will be missed, though he leaves many fine and treasured memories for all.

Gus,
You meant everything to Doug. I thank you for everything you did for him and for all you meant to him. You were his inspiration, his friend, his mentor. I have so many fond memories of you and of our trip to Japan. You will be missed by us at every moment.

February 20, 2013

Gus:

I know you can't hear me right now. I just learned of your death and I had to say goodbye.

I wish I had heard about the accident, I would have come to South Carolina and sat with you, talked to you, the whole time even if you couldn't hear. When I was in the hospital, you came to me and encouraged me. I never got to do that for you.

I am with you now, as your spirit will always be with me.

I love you, Gus. You were like a brother to me, and the father I never had. Your wisdom will continue in this earth in those you trained. You were more of the spirit of Takamatsu than even Dr. Hatsumi.

Thank you so much for all you invested in my life. I will pray for you always. May God reward you for all your many kindnesses to me.

And so our journeys diverge once again, but our paths remain forever together.
