Assunta Sorgia Obituary

Assunta Sorgia SUMMERVILLE - Assunta Sorgia, known to all as "Meme" passed away on September 14, 2013 at the age of 92 surrounded by her beloved family. Assunta was born April 26, 1921 in Sardinia, Italy to the proud parents of Caterina and Louie Zicchina. The family subsequently moved to Marseilles, France when Assunta was four years old. The family survived the German invasion on France and can be credited for keeping numerous Jewish families alive by providing shelter and food to them. During that time, Assunta learned many trades to include becoming a seamstress and made winter coats for the soldiers during the war. Assunta then married Antoine Sorgia on November 25, 1944 wherein the two became the proud parents of two beautiful girls, Catherine and Arlette. The family eventually immigrated to the United States and nestled in Chicago where Assunta and Antoine opened up a renowned restaurant called Antoine's Ambassador Restaurant. In no time, Assunta's dishes became loved by many with her French onion soup becoming almost instantly famous all the way to the west coast. After surpassing her late husband Antoine, Assunta traveled all over the United States and cared and raised many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Assunta found a final resting spot in Summerville with her daughter, the late Arlette and Sean. Assunta was loved instantly by anyone who ever met her. Surviving Assunta is her Daughter Catherine Becker of Billings, Montana and her many grandchildren to include France Branson of Myrtle Beach, SC, Antoine Holsapple of Charleston, Tonia Raley of Arizona, Eric Becker of Arizona and Assunta McGrail of Billings, Montana. Assunta also leaves behind many great grandchildren who will all miss her greatly. She was an angel in every sense of the word A memorial message may be written to the family at www.jamesadyal.com. My meme was the absolute best great grandmother anybody could ask for. She lived with me and my parents Tonia and Billy Raley when I was young. She took care of me and spoiled me. I loved her to pieces. She was an incredible women. I will miss her the rest of my life. I love u meme, thank you for everything you did for me.
