Arthur Schirmer Obituary

SCHIRMER, JR., A. Born on February 24, 1933, Arthur B. Schirmer, Jr. (Bro), was a graduate and longtime supporter of Clemson University, a first lieutenant in the United States Army, an owner of a successful landscape maintenance company, Schirmer's Nursery, which he developed into a site work construction company, Landscape Pavers, Ltd. He was also deeply involved in local politics; serving as City of Charleston alderman for sixteen years and served as the mayor-pro-tem for the City of Charleston when the late Mayor of the City of Charleston, J. Palmer Gaillard, Jr., was called to Washington, D.C. to serve as the Under Secretary of the Navy during the Jimmy Carter administration. As mayor pro-tem, Mr. Schirmer helped to acquire and dedicate the USS Yorktown at Patriot's Point, he led city council to build and dedicate several parking garages in downtown Charleston, and the Farmfield Tennis Center, located west of the Ashley River. In addition to local politics, Mr. Schirmer was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and served as president of the church. He was a member of the Arion Society and an honorary lifetime member of the German Friendly Society and an honorary lifetime member of the Hibernian Society of Charleston. He was a lover of life and an avid tennis player. He loved his walks on the beach with his dogs Honey, Duke, and November. He believed in his fellowship with his friends and everyone whose life he touched. Bro is survived by his wife, Jacquelyn Bull Schirmer; her two sons William and Trip, their children, Alexis, Olivia Grace and Drake Bull; his four children with his first wife, Elaine M. Schirmer: Cynthia Sue Schirmer, Rebecca Lynn Schirmer Brown, her son Kyle Brown, Bonnell Mason Schirmer Livingston (Jerry), and their two children, Holly and Gerhard Livingston; and his son, Arthur Bonnell Schirmer, III (Joyce), and their son Jacob Sass Schirmer; his sister, Ruth Schirmer DeHaven. He was predeceased by brother, John Tindal Schirmer and sister, Julie Schirmer Muckenfuss. He will be missed by many friends, especially Rebecca Venning. Arthur B. Schirmer, Jr., will be missed by all who knew him. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Bonnell Schirmer, Jr. are invited to attend the funeral services of the former Monday, July 21, 2008 at eleven o'clock in St. John's Lutheran Church, 5 Clifford Street. My deepest sympathies go to Jackie, Becky, Cindy, Bonnie, little Arthur and family. Big Arthur was fine man & true gentleman. He had a spirited youthful disposition that alway left you smiling & feeling better; he could, however, also provide a sage's insight be it witty or somber at a moment's notice. I so enjoyed my associations and proud to have called him a friend.

My Dear Jackie,
I was so sorry to hear about Arthur's passing. I will miss our time on the front porch listening to his southern brogue and deep laughter. His voice and smile were magical. I know you will miss him. I am in NY, but will contact you upon my return. I love you. Lee

I am terribly sorry for your loss. I can't think of a person that I have known in my life that will touch me the way that this man did. As a great friend of my father, he was a true testament to living life to its fullest. He will truly be missed. I will always remember him calling me "By Golly Miss Holly"!!!

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

Jackie,
Just wanted to express my sincere simpathy to you in Bro's passing. Since I live in Greer, I only got to see Bro during my visits with Buddy Bennett. Fortunantly while Buddy and I were fishing off a dock at Edisto on Thursday the 10th I called and spoke with Bro. I will miss him and will always be grateful for the pleasure of knowing him and calling him my friend.

I am so sad to hear about Arthur...he was very dear to me. My fondest memories are when he would surprise me each year around the holidays by planting a camilla bush in my yard...and in the summer he would leave fresh vegetables from his garden at my door. What a sweet, kind and thoughtful man! Jackie, Little "A" and Joyce...my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family...
