Arthur Jenkins Obituary

Dr. Arthur S. Jenkins RALEIGH, NC - Dr. Arthur S. Jenkins passed away peacefully on Friday, October 21st in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he and his beloved wife Frances lived since leaving their home in Beaufort in 2011. Dr. Jenkins was born on November 1, 1928 in Kobe, Japan to Charles Rees Jenkins and Elizabeth Simons Jenkins during their missionary services in Japan in the 1920's. After the family's return to the U.S., Dr. Jenkins spent his childhood years in Littleton and Fayetteville, North Carolina. He attended Davidson College for one year before being drafted into military service as a medic during the Korean War, where he continued to pursue his growing interest in medicine. After the war he completed his undergraduate degree at Davidson College before attending and graduating from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1957. He met his wife Frances while living in Columbia, SC where he was a medical resident at Columbia Hospital and she was a laboratory technician. The two were married in 1959 and moved to Beaufort, South Carolina in 1960, where they established a medical family practice, and raised a family of four boys as members of the First Presbyterian Church. Other than medicine, Dr. Jenkins enjoyed many of the pleasures of the Lowcountry - pleasures including hunting, fishing, eating oysters, and growing prize-winning camellias. Dr. Jenkins practiced Family Medicine in Beaufort for 48 years before retiring in 2008. In addition to his private practice and his years of service at Beaufort Memorial, he also provided cared for many patients at Bay View Nursing Home. As life would have it, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, which finally led to his retirement from medicine and his departure from the Lowcountry so that he and his wife could be closer to the assistance of their children in North Carolina. His disability required that he be cared for in an assisted living community, where he was admired by the staff for his sharp mind, and adored for his brilliant smile. He frequently provided advice and counseling to his clinical care team members, and would assist some with strengthening their medical knowledge in preparation for their advanced studies. He loved to share stories of his early years practicing medicine in Beaufort. He would lovingly brag about the more than 500 children he delivered in those early years when family practitioners had to fulfill many roles now performed by specialists. He was also deeply honored and proud to have the Arthur S. Jenkins Medical Plaza dedicated in his name. Dr. Jenkins was preceded in death by his wife Frances, and his brother Rees Jenkins. He is survived by his sister Beth DeVane, and his four sons, and six grandsons: Arthur Jr. and Celia Jenkins of Sierra Vista, AZ and their two sons Sean and Cody; Charles and Sheila Jenkins of Cary, NC and their two sons Chase and Parker; Wade and Karen Jenkins of Charlotte NC and their son Matthew; John and Sandy Jenkins of Durham, NC and their son John Jr. A memorial service for Dr. Jenkins will be held in the main sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church of Beaufort on Saturday, October 29th at 2:00 p.m., with a reception afterwards at the fellowship hall across the street. There will not be a graveside burial ceremony, but flowers may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church for the memorial service. Donations may also be made in his memory to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation. Visit our guestbook at www.legacy.com/obituaries/ charleston

Dr. Jenkins was our childhood physician. We always loved and adored him. He was very quiet and took great care of our health needs. Our parents, Alex Buster and Victoria Simmons also loved Dr. Jenkins. He was a great earthly physician, who is now resting with his Master Physician! Keeping the Jenkins family in our thoughts and prayers. May God's continued blessings shine upon each of you.

Art Jenkins welcomed me to Beaufort in 1975 in his quiet and genuine way. Art always tried to improve medical care in Beaufort but never expected or desired recognition. I remember one night taking the barge over to Spring Island with Art to speak with Mrs. Lucille Walker. Art had paved the way for a donation from the Weezie Foundation of an ultrasound machine for the obstetrical service at BMH. This would be the first ultrasound machine in the hospital. We procured the ultrasound and Art's satisfaction came from knowing that it would improve obstetrical care. This was Art. He was a leader but stayed in the background. Art was instrumental in the advancement of medical care in Beaufort. I am privileged to have been able to know and practiced with Art Jenkins

Working Labor and Delivery (Station 3) at BMH in 1967 is where I met Dr. Jenkins. He was a very kind man, his patients adored him and the staff loved working with with him. No more "Dr Jenkins please call Station 3", no more leaving an office full of patients to go deliver a baby at BMH, You are now on your final house call. Two prescriptions remain in your black bag. Rx to your family: PLS (prayers, love and support) QS (PRN)
And to you dear Dr Jenkins, RIP-stat

Beaufort has lost one of the best physicians it ever had! Long gone are the times of house calls and great physician/patient relationships, but Dr. Jenkins did all of that with a loving spirit and a kind heart. I wish I could have known him in his younger days; I bet he had some great stories to tell. Wade, my thoughts will be sent to you and your family during this difficult transition.

When I first came to Beaufort I met this wonderful man at Bayview Nursing Center, where he was the medical director at the time. Towards the end of his time in Beaufort I had the pleasure to be one of the therapists working with him. He kept me on my toes and I enjoyed every session I had with him. Such a great man!!!

Dr. Jenkins became our family doctor when he moved to Beaufort. My 2 children were 2 of the 500 that he delivered. He was my husband's doctor until he retired. He went hunting and fishing with my father. He made house calls for my grand parents when they were sick. He was always loved and will be missed. God bless his family at this time. May he rest in peace.

I so missed this very sweet, wonderful doctor who took care of Jim, my kids and me up to few years before he retired. I use to practiced at getting this serious man to smile and give me one of his eye twinkles. He loved his patience and his practice. I was blessed to have him as a doctor. He made strong suggestions in the healthy weight lost department. I will never forget the fig tree he dug up in payment for turtoring his son when he was out of school because of illness. That tree still puts out yummy figs. RIP DR, JENKINS,

Dr. Jenkins was our family doctor for many years. We saw him many times, especially when our children were young. John visited in our home often, and I have great memories of him being part of the youth group at The Baptist Church of Beaufort--especially the 1988 mission trip to Boston. Our sincerest sympathies to his family. He was truly a great man.

Dr. Jenkins was recommended as a family doctor when I moved to Beaufort with my husband a daughter in 1971. He cared for us and my additional two daughters while he practiced. He provided medical and emotional support. He truly cared for his patients as an "old fashioned" doctor. He even made a house call once when I could not make it to the office. He was also a fine Southern gentleman.
