Arthur Howe Obituary

Arthur Gasque Howe, Jr. MT. PLEASANT - Arthur G. Howe, Jr. passed away peacefully on June 20, 2022 at the Hospice Cottages in Mt. Pleasant, SC after a lengthy illness. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a celebration of his birth and life from 7pm-8pm on Tuesday, August 9 at Sunrise Presbyterian Church located on Station 32 Sullivan's Island. Arthur was born on August 9, 1950 in Charleston, SC to Arthur and Bruce Howe. He had a memorable childhood surfing and growing up on the Isle of Palms and in Mt. Pleasant with his family and friends. Arthur graduated from Moultrie High School in 1968. After several years studying yoga and holistic lifestyle in California, he earned a degree in Media Arts from the University of South Carolina in 1976. In 1986, he married Eileen Shields and had two daughters, Ileana and Caitlin Howe. Beginning in 1979, Arthur helped recruit movies with the fledgling South Carolina Film Office, providing them location images of beautiful Charleston and his beloved Lowcountry. In 1980, he founded Location Carolina, a location scouting and management company, and spent more than 30 years managing locations, decorating, and propping feature films, television movies, commercials, and music videos in the Carolinas and Georgia. He maintained a successful relationship with the SC Film Office over his many years in the industry and helped identify and manage the locations for films and television movies, including Swamp Thing, The Lords of Discipline, Rich in Love, North & South, Queen, The Prince of Tides, Forrest Gump, and Ace Ventura 2. Location Carolina played a significant role in attracting and facilitating numerous photo shoots for the world's best fashion catalogs. It was said by more than one photographer and production coordinator that "Arthur Howe opened up Charleston's finest to us." Arthur was a wonderful storyteller with an incredible sense of humor and an encyclopedic knowledge of history, sports and film. He was an avid Gamecock fan and was deeply passionate about the arts, with a gift for photography and a particular fondness for music in its many forms. When he wasn't traveling to the Blue Ridge Mountains or to the Edisto River to visit close friends, he could be found on his nightly sunset walks on Sullivan's Island. Of all his accomplishments, Arthur's greatest prides and joys were his children and grandchildren. His fierce love for them was one of his most exceptional respected qualities, and he happily made them his highest priority. Arthur was also a dear friend to all and devoted much of his time to open heart meditation. Arthur is survived by his daughters, Caitlin McCaw Howe (Geoff) and Ileana Marissa Howe (Keith); mother to his daughters, Eileen Hilera Shields; his mother, Bruce McCaw Howe; his siblings, William McCaw Howe, Bruce Howe Hendricks (Teddy), and Genevieve Howe Hay (Gordon); his grandchildren, Ava, Gavin, Sage, and Asher; his beloved four legged companion, Simba; his step-children, Lauriel, Rita, Furman, and several nieces, nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur G. Howe, Sr. The Howe family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at the Roper Hospice Cottages and the many friends who brought Arthur much joy, laughter-and doughnuts. Arthur had an immense impact on many people throughout his life; the world will not be the same without his contagious and loving free spirit. He will be deeply missed in the physical yet his spirit is still with us and his love will remain. As he would frequently say, we "love you to the beyond." I send my deepest condolences to the Howe family. I met Dad & Caitlin at an ER visit in 2021. We had an instant connection due to his illness & my lifelong brain disorder. Seeing that we bonded so quickly, Caitlin & began talking and found we had a LOT in common as well. Even our telephone numbers are just one digit off. Lol. We connect with our soul family instantly & they became mine. Dad, thank you for your light, humor, & contributions. Sis, I got you forever.

When I first met Arthur, I entered a new community that he'd been a part of for several years. I felt awkward in my newness at the events we attended. Arthur's gift of making a me feel welcome, at ease and filled with laughter is cherished. He warmed so many people's hearts around him to be joyful. Wherever you are Arthur, I'm very grateful for your spirit. You've spread so much beauty in this world and love. I've admired too, your devotion to the Creator, which you shared with delightful care.

My deepest sympathy for your family. I met Arthur in 2007 when I first came to the United States. I was an Advertising Producer back in the Philippines and I was looking to do some similar work in Charleston. Although we never worked on projects together, he was always so gracious, kind and funny. He made me feel welcomed in my new country. Godspeed Arthur. May you Rest In Peace and Light.

I became a friend of Arthur's in 1979 on the beach in Santa Cruz, CA. He was staying with Karl and Lorraine. We only spent a few months doing fun things as friends and then he left to go back to South Carolina. I haven't seen him since. Great human being, the best! Rest in peace dear Arthur

I will always remember Arthur in positivity and love. He was kind, funny, and caring. He was also an excellent photographer. Most of all to me, he was a friend who shared his beautiful heart with everyone and often cared more about others than himself. He truly made this world a better place. I will miss him. For sure his heart is radiating love every moment. My condolences to his family. Blessings.
