Anthony Meyer Obituary

Anthony Joseph (AJ) Meyer, Jr. KNOXVILLE, TN - Anthony Joseph (AJ) Meyer, Jr. passed away on June 13, 2022, in Knoxville, Tennessee. Born on September 17, 1966, in Charleston SC, to Anthony Joseph Meyer, Sr. and Twitty Hodges Meyer. AJ was a 1988 graduate of the College of Charleston and received his Masters from Vanderbilt University. His graduate degree was in Fundraising/Development, and he had a lengthy career working in the fundraising field primarily for universities and health care systems. Most recently he had been the Chief Development Officer for the US Marshals Museum. Some of his fondest memories were times spent with his Alpha Tau Omega brothers during and after college and attending football games with friends and family. His many years spent in the fundraising circles also provided a community of co-workers and friends that lasted through the years. AJ is survived by his two brothers, Michael Kevin (Karen) and Joseph Bernardin (Eleanor), his nieces Helen Virginia and Emory Nolan, nephews Patrick Thomas, Ryan Michael, and Joseph Bernardin, II, as well as cousins, aunts and uncles. A private memorial service will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to his dad's scholarship fund, the Tony Meyer scholarship at the College of Charleston in SC. It is always puzzling and heartbreaking to have someone pass away at a young age. Anthony/AJ was only 55, and had great potential ahead of him. His work benefited many organizations and the people they served. I am sorry to lose a good friend. I pray for the comfort of his brothers Kevin and Joe and their families, as well as his friends across the country.

Anthony was the first development officer for me as the new Dean of Nursing at MUSC. He was a new grad of the C of C ,charming and very professional. I was pleased when he left to go to Vanderbilt as I knew he was a natural and would have a great career in development. I often thought of him as I went on to other universities. He will be missed.
