Annie Tickle Obituary

Annie Dukes Tickle DANIEL ISLAND - Annie Dukes Tickle, of Daniel Island, S.C., formerly of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., entered into eternal rest at Summit Place Retirement Community, Daniel Island on Tuesday, September 1, 2009. Mrs. Tickle was born on January 10, 1923 in Rowesville, SC, to Lula Carter Dukes and George Jefferson Dukes. She was a fun-loving person with many, many friends. She graduated from Orangeburg High School then put herself through Business School. During World War II, Annie worked at the Port of Embarcation in North Charleston as an office secretary. Later, still during World War II, she and a friend went to Cisco, Texas for three months to take a mechanic course so they could replace mechanics at the Port of Embarcation who were called overseas to fight for our Country. After the War Annie married and moved to Mount Airy, N.C., where she lived for fifty years. She raised three children there and was an extraordinary mother and a much loved friend to so many people. In 1996 she relocated to Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and worked at Sandpiper Village Retirement Community as Hostess. She lived in an apartment at Sandpiper in order to be available to assist the Residents twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Anytime there was a special need, from making a trip to the store to entertaining Sandpiper guests for lunch of dinner, the first one to be called was Annie. She was always so willing to help and brought much happiness to the Residents and Staff. She loved playing bridge and could play all day if time permitted. Mrs. Tickle was the beloved mother of Bob Tickle of Winston-Salem, N.C., Lynda McNeeley and husband Bill of Atlanta, GA, and Steven Tickle of Mt. Airy, N.C. Also surviving Mrs. Tickle is one sister Doris Jennings and her husband Bill of Goose Creek. She is also survived by five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A private Memorial Service will take place at Bethel United Methodist Church in Charleston at a later date. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Hospice of Charleston, 676 Wando Park Blvd., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464. Professional services by PALMETTO CREMATION SOCIETY, Charleston, SC. Dear Doris and Bill, Lynda and the Tickle family,

Although saddened to learn of Annie's death I take comfort in knowing she lived a happy, fulfilled life. One of the best decisions I ever made was to encourage her to come to Sandpiper. My job was made easier because of Annie. Her contagious personality made friends of everyone she met. I am grateful for the many happy years I shared with all of you. May the happy memories you share comfort you in this time of sorrow. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.

In sympathy and love,
Mary Bunce

Dear Lynda and family,
We are saddened to hear about your mother. Thank you for the special visit I had with you and your Mom on Monday. The first time my mom, Mary and I met your Mom was when she moved in across the hall. I said what a neat name you have and she replied, "I love my name". So Annie and so full of life and joy. She was a great friend to mom and always had kind words to say to her. You and family are in our thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,
Nancy & Paul Pisarski (Mary Bator's daughter)

Dear Doris, I was so sorry to read about Annie. She was a delightful person and certainly made my father's stay at Sandpiper much more pleasant. She was a delightful person and always made you smile. When I think of my dad, I always think of you and Annie. he was very fond of the two of you. You and her family have our thoughts and prayers with you.

Warmest regards,
