Evelyn George Obituary

May 5, 1931 - September 17, 2021 Evelyn Grace George was born on May 5, 1931, in Long Beach, California, and died on September 17, 2021. She was educated at Ulysses S. Grant Elementary School, Charles A. Lindbergh Junior High School, and David Starr Jordan High School, all in Long Beach. She earned a BA degree, magna cum laude, in Government at the University of Redlands, Redlands, California, and an MA degree in Government from California State University Los Angeles. She taught American Government for thirty years at Covina High School, Covina California. During her teaching career, she was active in the Los Angeles chapter of the World Affairs Council and took students to events sponsored by it. She also participated in trips to Washington, D.C. with groups of students. Evelyn was elected twice to the Los Angeles County Democratic Central Committee and actively supported members of the Democratic Party at all levels. Evelyn moved to Arizona upon her retirement in 1989, living for five years in Sedona and for eleven years in Glendale, Arizona prior to returning to California in 2005. From October 2006 until 2013 she served as Volunteer Programs Manager at the Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation for the Arts and Crafts in Alta Loma, California. She lived in Rancho Cucamonga until her death. She is predeceased by her mother, Bertha Gilbert Torpey, her father, Nelson C. Torpey, her sister, Iverna Dawson, and her daughter, Katherine Eileen George who died in 1967 of Hodgkin's Disease at the age of thirteen. Survivors include her two sons: Larry Michael George of Rancho Cucamonga, California, and Kenneth Steven George of Montclair, California. She is also survived by several cousins, two nieces, Barbara Truitt and Sharon Martin of Fountain Valley, California, and numerous friends in both California and Arizona. According to Evelyn's wishes, there will be no services.
