Annie Allen Obituary

Annie L. Allen Hanahan - Annie Ellen Looper Allen of Charleston, SC entered into eternal rest on March 1, 2018. Mrs. Allen was born at Riverside Infirmary, Charleston, SC on August 6, 1925. She was the daughter of Arthur Baker Looper and Ellen Mae Welborn, both of Pickens County, SC. After graduating from North Charleston High School she attended Winthrop College obtaining her teaching degree. She continued her graduate studies at Washburn University and the Citadel, where she received a Masters of Arts in Teaching and a Masters Degree in Special Education. To better help her students reach their goals she also earned a Counseling Degree. Due to her passion for the education of her students and herself, she obtained certifications for teaching elementary, middle and high school. She retired from the Charleston County School District after thirty years as an educator. Mrs. Allen was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. She was committed to her church and as honored to be a Lay Reader. Her beautiful voice was always welcome in the church choir. She supported the church activities with enthusiasm and energy and she especially loved her fellowship with the "Quilting Ladies." Throughout her life she was as an avid reader, historian, genealogist and enjoyed intricate needlework. She made many beautiful pieces by hand and generously gave them to members of her family. Because of her love of history and genealogy, she belonged to and supported several lineal organizations and societies. She was a member of the Colonial Dames XVII Century, where she had served as the local Chapter President and Registrar, South Carolina State President and Scholarship Chairman at the national level. In addition, for many years Mrs. Allen traveled to Washington, DC to help certify applications to the organization. She was a member of New England Women; Daughters of the American Revolution; Daughters of the War of 1812; Huguenot Society; First Families of South Carolina, Maryland and New Jersey. She was also a member the Order of Ancient Planters; Order of Descendants of the Colonial Cavaliers and Daughters of American Colonies; Descendants of the Founders of New Jersey, the Guild of Artisan and Tradesman the Daughters of the Confederacy and Colonial Wars. Mrs. Allen was a devoted, loving mother and wife with a wonderful laugh. Her passion for history and education provided her with a great appreciation for all those who sacrificed and served their country in its conflicts from the Revolutionary War to present day. Throughout her life she dutifully instilled an appreciation for the history of her family and the contributions that were made by both the women and men. Mrs. Allen was predeceased by her parents, her husband Captain Charles Fletcher Allen, USN Retired, two brothers Henry Welborn Looper and Arthur Baker Looper, Jr. and her sister Mrs. Melvin Floyd Gay (Frances). She is survived by a son, Charles Fletcher Allen Jr., a daughter and son-in-law Jeanne Allen Ziemann (Andrew) three grandchildren: Rachel Ann Ziemann Futch (Matthew) and their children John, Evelyn Nicole and Isabelle Bennett; Sgt. Andrew M. Ziemann, U.S. Army (Kelly) and their children Madison Nicole Slagle, Aubrey Elizabeth and Sadie Grace; Alexander O. Ziemann (Megan) and their children Teigan Ann and Harper Quinn; two nieces Frances Gay Westbrook (Douglas) and Miss Elizabeth Floyd Gay, and a grandnephew, Douglas Herring Westbrook, Jr. She will be laid to rest beside her husband of sixty-two joyful and glorious years. The family will receive visitors on Thursday, March 8 from 4-6pm at Carolina Memorial Gardens on Rivers Avenue. The funeral service will be held Friday, March 9 at 11am at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, W. Montague Avenue, North Charleston. The burial on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 12pm at Sunrise Memorial Cemetery in Pickens, SC. Memorials may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church North Charleston. Mrs. Allen was one of my favorite teachers at Ladson Elementary. She had such a happy personality as well as being a firm educator.
I remember her handwriting was so beautiful and I wanted to write just like her.
My sincere condolences to the family.

I knew Annie well because she always encouraged me to use her (& my) Welborn ancestry to join other heriditary organizatioons. I saw her annually in DC at the Colonial Dames XVIIC Meetings and will miss her very much. My condolences to the family.

Ann Allen was a teacher at Ladson Elementary and Alice Birney Middle School She was an excellent professional. Ann touched the lives of many children in a very positive way. She was a true friend and will be missed.

Mrs. Annie was Registrar and a key member of The Society of First Families of SC, 1670-1700. She was a lovely and gracious lady who will be greatly missed. We in S.FFSC wish the family well and pray that the pain of this moment will soon be replace by warm and loving memories and the sure knowledge of eternal reunion in Heaven with otherloved ones. RB
