Anna Prior Obituary

Anna Gray (de Brux) Prior HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC Anna Gray (de Brux) Prior, 81, died February 28, 2023 surrounded by her family at her Hilton Head Island home after a lengthy illness. She was the wife of The Rev. Dr. J. Gregory Prior. A Charleston native, Anna Gray was born November 13, 1941, the daughter of the late Leon S. de Brux and Helen (Barbot) de Brux. She attended Bishop England High School and graduated with honors from the College of Charleston in 1965. She was a loving mother of four children and served as an adult education teacher in the Horry County and Beaufort County schools. She was named as the Horry County Adult Education Teacher of the Year in 1991. In retirement, she divided her time between Hilton Head Island and Little Compton RI. A committed Christian, she devoted her teaching gifts as a Christian education leader for children and adults. She was a long-time board member of the Episcopal Church Women of Rhode Island. She was a founding board member of Programs for Exceptional People in Hilton Head and a member of the Ladies Benevolent Society of Charleston. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children, Matthew de Brux Prior and Helen Prior Ashton of Hilton Head Island and Susan Prior Thomaes of Berkeley CA and her three beloved grandchildren, Emma Ashton of Madison WI, Anna Gray Ashton of Hilton Head Island and Aidan Prior Thomaes of Berkeley CA. She is also survived by two brothers, Joseph C. de Brux of Isle of Palms and Sumter F. de Brux of Sullivan's Island. Anna Gray was preceded in death by her daughter Gray Prior of Middletown RI and her brother, Leon B. de Brux of Charleston. Her funeral eucharist will be held on Saturday, April 1 at 10:30 am at All Saints Episcopal Church, Hilton Head Island, followed by burial in St. Paul's Churchyard in Summerville, SC.
