I remember going to middle school and high school with 'drew'. We also worked together at McDonald's as teens! We use to have so much fun together and he even made me hip to a few songs back in the day! I remember coming to your house often over the summers and really bonding! I never knew you went to the military nor did I know you were K.I.A! I'm mad at my self bc I allowed us to lose contact and now I can't say see you later! You were an amazing person and I'll NEVER FORGET YOU! REST IN PARADISE MY FRIEND AND I'LL SEE YOU AGAIN!! PSHS 2008 COUGAR FOR LIFE!!

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Meari Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to troops in Afghanistan this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of PFC Andrew Meari. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. Meari Made me laugh every day, no matter what he always had a smile on his face and it kept me upbeat...I was from illinois as well and gave him rides home and I spoke with his mother for a bit at a panera bread and I was out of country when he was killed and I will never forgive myself for not being there when he gave his life for his country...I don't know if his mom will see this but I would love nothing more to give her a hug and visit his resting place, I think about him every day and miss him dearly, Im having a lot of problems and I would really like to meet with Tigers mom and pay my respects to him...

Dear Meari Family,

I am in Afghanistan until the end of this year, but I had not heard about Andrew's death until I had already gotten here when I was talking to one of our friends in the 101st. I met Andrew in basic training at Fort Benning in October 2008. I can always remember him as a funny and caring person. Someone who always listened to the things that you had to say. At the same time he always had the perfect story to tell you to make you laugh and get you through the bad times. I was very honored to have met Andrew, and I am grateful for the service that he rendered to this country. I know that my family appreciates the service of men and women, not just me. I hope that this message reaches you and that you know that even 3 years down the road I remember Andrew and the kind of person that he was. God Bless the whole family.

Dear Meari family,

I know there are no words to say at this time, except how sorry that I am. I truly feel your loss and pain. My thoughts and prayers are with you always. Andrew will never be forgotten.

For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

For those missing in action;
for those who didn’t make it home.
I know you’re in God’s presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.

I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

I salute you .

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to PFC. Andrew Meari our Brother-in-Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Andrew. And to Andrew it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Andrew, you are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,335 military Legionnaire Veterans of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Andrew’s family and loved ones.
