Andrew Ballentine Obituary

BALLENTINE, Andrew Andrew Wendell (Red) Ballentine died October 29, 2006 at a local care facility. He was born January 18, 1924, in Leesville to John William Ballentine and Bertha Shealy Ballentine. Red graduated from Little Mountain High School, served in the Navy during the Second World War, then enrolled at The Citadel, where he became the state's first athletic publicity director, serving under Coach Quinn Decker. For the following three years, he held the same position at The University of South Carolina, working for Coach Rex Enright. He met Jean Hill of Darlington at Carolina, and they were married in 1949, the year they both graduated. Red then joined the DuPont Company when it started in Camden. During his time there he was recalled by the Navy and served 14 months in the Korean Conflict. He had a 35 year career at DuPont, the final 32 in Wilmington, Delaware. He retired as director of marketing communications for several departments, traveling worldwide. He and Jean moved back to South Carolina in 1985 and moved into their new retirement house at Seabrook Island the following year. At Seabrook, Red served on the property owners' board as environmental chair during the beach renourishment, then was elected the second mayor of the Town. He was co-founder and editor of the Seabrooker for its first seven years until illness forced his retirement last December. He was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. He served his Church at the Congregational and Synodical level in both Delaware and South Carolina. He was a volunteer at Hollings Hospital for several years. Besides his wife of 56 years, Red is survived by two sons, Rev. Andrew W. Ballentine and his wife Patricia of Williamsburg, VA and John Ballentine and his wife Melissa of Charleston, SC; four grandchildren: Nathan Ballentine and his wife Renee of Richmond, VA, Emily Ballentine of New York, Richard Ballentine of The University of South Carolina and Eliza of Lenoir-Rhyne College. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Wendell Red Ballentine are invited to attend the funeral services of the former, Thursday, November 2, 2006 at two o'clock in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. Interment, Bethany Cemetery. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL Wednesday between five and seven o'clock. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, 405 King Street, Charleston, SC 29403 or Lutheran Hospice, 900 Johnnie Dodds Blvd., Suite 200, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
