I worked with Alvin at Westvaco and had known him for quite a while. We're still getting in touch with each other thru e-mails to share some funny jokes and stuff. When I heard of his passing, I thought for a moment that it was only a joke. I was really shocked and saddened. He would be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with him and family. Please accept my deepest sympathy and condolences.

Alvin was always a dear friend of my family's. I guess we met him in around 1969, when I was about 10 years old. He put up with me throughout my teenage years like a big brother, and I was quite a handful. Alvin and I had kept in touch with each other throughout the many years via phone calls. Sadly, the last time I saw him in person was at my own mother's funeral in 1999, where he was a pall-bearer. I will always remember his smile, ready wit, and often-times "corny" jokes. I remember that, as a kid, I used to pinch his arm and tell him that he had "crinkly skin". More recently, I have thought of him as I looked at my own older skin & thought "I have crinkly skin like Alvin's now!"... I love this man and I will miss him until I see him again above
My deepest sympathy to his family.

I worked with Alvin for many years before I retired. In fact Alvin took over my lab when I left. I also was saddened and surprised by his passing. He will missed by all who knew him. My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief.

Alvin was the “Gibraltor” of the Carbon Research staff at Westvaco – a quiet, steady contributor whom everyone could count on even in the most challenging moments. I consider myself truly blessed to have known Alvin, both professionally and personally.

My sympathy to the family. I worked with Alvin for a number of years in the Carbon Research group. A hard worker, steady, dependable, and very pleasant to work with. I am sad to know he passed away much too soon.

Alvin and I also worked together. He was a good fellow who could always be counted on when needed. He will be missed by all of the lab folks and the world will seem smaller and colder without him.

I was very saddened upon hearing about Alvin's passing. I worked with Alvin 25 years in the lab and I saw him about every day. Besides being cheerful and a good friend, when I knew him he was a great appreciator of the arts and lover of beauty, which made him an only a more interesting person to know. Some things I remember he had in his collection, were some original oil paintings and a hand made Persian rug.. We discussed books of all kinds. I could go on but let me just say I am a much better person for knowing Alvin. He will be missed.

Fran and Meta, I am sorry to hear about our friends passing. I can honestly say that Alvin was an outstanding guy. We always called him Thump growing up with him on Edgewater. I last talked to him about six months ago and was surprised at his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you guys.
