Alvin Giet Obituary

Alvin Charles Giet SUMMERVILLE - Alvin Charles Giet, 90, of Summerville, SC, died on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2013 at Veterans Victory House in Walterboro, SC. Mr. Giet was born December 13, 1922 in Rittman, OH, a son of Gustave J. Giet and Ella Whitman Giet. He was a retired safety officer for the Department of Defense at the Polaris Missile Facility and the Naval Weapons Station in Charleston, SC. Mr. Giet served in World War II as a Sergeant in the 670th Field Artillery Battalion and received the World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal and European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Mildred Lea Fulmer Giet who went home to heaven in August of 2012. He is survived by his 6 children: Charles (Ava) Giet of Summerville, Karen (Linn) Yeager of Mt. Juliet, TN, Bruce Giet of Summerville, Barbara (Bob) Gladney of Brandon, MS, David (Debra) Giet of Harleyville, and Kenneth Giet of Clarks Hill, SC; 15 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; one brother and two sisters all of Ohio. Mr. Giet was a member of Summerville Baptist Church and a long time member of the American Legion. He loved his family and treasured his friends. He was especially generous with trinkets, time and ice cream where his grandchildren and great grandchildren were concerned. Until he lost his sight, he was the one all his family and friends called upon for help with projects and repairs. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 2, 2013, Parks Funeral Home Chapel, Summerville, SC at 11:00 AM. The family will receive friends following the service at Summerville Baptist Church at 12 o'clock noon. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Summerville Baptist Church Building Fund, 417 Central Avenue, Summerville, SC 29483. What a pleasure it was to have known Mr. Giet and to be a part of his care at Veterans Victory House. He was very lucky to have such a wonderful family. He will be missed.
