Alphonzo A. Parker CHARLESTON - Alphonzo Allen Parker, 87, of Charleston, SC, was granted his eternal wings to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday, March 25, 2022. Alphonzo's early education began at Central School on Edisto Island, SC. He completed grades 9 through 11 at Larimer School (Presbyterian) also on Edisto Island. After the closing of Larimer, Alphonzo came to Charleston, SC, where he completed his senior year and graduated from Avery Institute in 1953. He continued his education at Harbison Junior College in Irmo, SC. Alphonzo then attended and graduated from Rutgers University (Political Science) in New Brunswick, NJ. Alphonzo, a lifelong Presbyterian, served on the Executive Committee of the National Council of Presbyterian Men. He also served as Moderator of the Presbyterian Men of Zion Olivet Presbyterian Church for a number of years and as Trustee and %ding Elder. He was known for his intellect, business acuity, exemplary negotiating skills, impartiality, and his kind and compassionate spirit. In 1999, Alphonzo retired from the National Linen Service after 30+ years of service, where he distinguished himself as being hired as the first African American Route Salesman, Supervisor, and Department Manager. After his retirement, he was appointed to serve on the Redevelopment Preservation Committee by the Honorable Joseph F. Riley, Jr., former Mayor of Charleston, SC. Additionally, Alphonzo served his community as Vice President of the Radcliffeborough Association in Charleston and was a 50+ year member of the Lily Work Lodge #10, where he served as Treasurer for numerous years. He remained active as a Poll Manager in the Charleston area. The relatives and friends of Mr. Alphonzo Parker are invited to attend his Home Going Service on Saturday, April 2, 2022, 12 noon, at Zion Olivet Presbyterian Church, 3347 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston S.C. Alexandre (Peter), Carmen F. McFadden, and Dr. Veronica G. Parker; grandchildren, Jamie Robert McFadden, Laiya Filar Belle Alexandre, and Christopher Alphonzo McFadden; siblings, Josephine L. Pompey, Erline G. Howell, and Issa.ac Samuel Green; nieces and nephews, Sheldon T. Pompey (Pamela), Carla P. Bennett (Jerome), the late Taylor Francis Pompey (Martha), Samuel R. Pompey (Mandy), Tara K. Marshall (Justin), Gregory K. Green, Gerrett K. Green, Harris Lee Greene Jr., and IViarlo Greene (Rachael). Those who will also treasure his memories are his devoted brother-in-law, Joseph Hilton (Priscilla), sister-in-law, Inez H. Graham (Tyrone), numerous cousins (especially Peter 0. Meggett (Louise) and Janice C. Benjamin (James), and a host of other relatives and friends.
