Alice Thomas Obituary

Alice E. Thomas HANAHAN - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of our beloved mother, Alice E. Thomas, 97, of Hanahan. She passed peacefully in her sleep on July 6, after a short illness. Born on October 12, 1927 in Lexington, Virginia, Alice was a country girl at heart. The soil was her foundation: to grow, create and heal. In the face of adversity, she was a warrior. She was a woman of strong character, high moral principles, ethics and generous to her bones. Alice worked for the phone company before marrying the love of her life and welcoming four children as they traveled around the country with the military. Her devotion to her family was steadfast. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and spent her days gardening and propagating to share her bounty. She volunteered at the City of Charleston greenhouse until the age of 92, when the pandemic stopped her. Nature was her source of comfort as she grew plants for family and friends. She had a kind heart and soul but a steel backbone, never suffering fools. She welcomed all into her plant world sharing all she learned and grew. She loved jumping into the car to visit most of our national parks, botanical gardens and her yearly trip to various mountains. Apple and peach picking were annual endeavors only to share most with family and friends. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Francis L Thomas, Sr., her mother and father and sisters. She is survived by her children, Frank (Kitten) of Summerville, Allen of Hanahan, Gail (Owen) of Charleston, and Peggy of Wadmalaw Island; grandchildren, Terri, Sabrina, Chelsea and Logan; and two great-grandchildren, Walker and Parker. In addition, she is survived by Ardith, our "adopted" family member. A private family graveside service will be held.
