Alice & Tommy, your dear Mom, the elegant Southern matriarch whose radiant personality and cheerful hospitality knew no bounds, was one of the great joys of my school days at Porter. Her sparkling eyes, melodious voice and contagious laughter are all unforgettable. I can only smile through tears now, as I remember the delicious food and wonderful stories your Mom served us, always ready to make room for one more who might drop by, stranger or friend, for her heart was bigger than life.

Love & prayers from Cairo...

Mrs. Lemacks was an incredible person. In my world she was larger than life. I remember so many great times with the Lemacks family. Candy always made sure that all were made to feel welcome. She did so many nice things for me. She made my bridal bouquet and it was gorgeous. It was made with love and especially with me in mind. She gave so much to me. The most special thing that she gave me was the love of her incredible daughters. How blessed am I to have such fine women as my friends. Thank you Candy. Love, Mary

Dear Lemacks Family,
I am so sorry for the loss of your mother, and I regret I did not get to meet her sooner, so that I could experience first-hand the wonderful reflections that I have heard you and others share about her.

May the comfort of the Holy Spirit sustain you, and the love and prayers of family and friends carry you, as you cherish the memories and rich heritage passed on to you by such a gracious lady.

Her nickname was "Candy", and how appropriate it was! She was my "Aunt Candy", and I adored her! Even though she was busy with her own schedule, she was always there for me and others, be they relatives or friends. Her advice was accepted gratefully and cherished. Aunt Candy had a multitude of friends who enjoyed her unique, special, warm personality. Everyone was welcomed to her beautiful home with open arms, and her large, extended family looked forward to a visit with Aunt Candy.

Aunt Candy helped everyone who needed it. When I was a senior at the College of Charleston, my mother, Aunt Candy's sister, died. Aunt Candy offered me a home when I had none for as long as I needed it, and no rent was ever charged or mentioned. She was such a comforting, generous person, and she wanted everything to be as perfect and lovely as possible. She personally sewed exquisite lace around the end of the sleeves of my dear mother's shroud to make it as pretty as possible. I never would have thought of that, but that was Aunt Candy---always effecting beauty everywhere. I shall never forget that nor all the many other expressions of love from my Aunt Candy.

There is an old expression my mother always used, and I never understood it as a child but have come to appreciate it in my adult life: "pretty is as pretty does". Aunt Candy had exceptional physical beauty, but her inner beauty rivaled her gorgeous looks. Truly, she epitomized that old adage.

Aunt Candy, thank you for a lifetime of joy. I'm crying as I write this, but I know you are with God, making other angels laugh, sing, and be joyful, just as you did here for all of us on Earth. I shall miss you for the rest of my days.

Your loving niece, "Dickie"

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.
