Alice Elizabeth Godwin GOOSE CREEK - Alice Elizabeth Godwin passed away on December 22, 2022. A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, at 11:00am at Northside Baptist Church in
North Charleston, South Carolina. Mini History of Beth Godwin: On February 1, 1932, Alice Elizabeth (Beth) was born into the loving family of Paul and Leona Odum, in
Swansboro, N.C. Beth had one brother, Paul; and two sisters, Sue and Judy. She and her brother fought quite often when they were children, but their no nonsense mother quickly resolved all arguments in her own way. Paul and Beth became the best of friends when they grew up. Paul became a successful, Godly pastor who died at the early age of fifty seven. Beth also had two sisters, Sue and Judy. They were much younger, but very dear to her. She babysat with Judy, who was twelve years younger than she, and who later became the self-appointed overseer of the boys who came to see Beth. She let them know when she thought it was time for them to leave. Beth always loved school. She strove to excel in all her studies and graduated from high school as Valedictorian. She earned a business certificate from the College of Hampton Roads, a Bachelor's Degree in education from Carthage College and a Master's Degree in education from South Eastern University, now Texas A&M. She was also an avid reader and was interested in writing. She had two works published. Beth joined her local church at the age of eleven. It was just the thing to do, but there was no real change and certainly no salvation involved. Her church called another pastor who preached that everyone sinned and needed to ask forgiveness for their sins and to ask Jesus to save them. Beth hesitated because she was already a member of the church and wondered what people would say. She began to feel strong conviction and on one March Sunday morning, at the age of eighteen, she went forward and accepted Jesus as her Savior. Dewey had just re-dedicated his life to His Lord. It was this and Beth's new found faith that brought them together, although they had known each other since First Grade. On August 23, 1952, Dewey and Beth were united in marriage, which lasted just shy of seventy years. During those years, Dewey pastored their churches in Texas, Illinois, and Wisconsin. He also established and was administrator of five growing Christian schools. Beth worked with Dewey in these ministries. She taught Sunday School, entertained guests, did visitation, held Bible Studies, and a great many other things. Beth taught school for thirty-one years, seventeen of which was in Christian schools where Dewey was the administrator. Those were enjoyable and fruitful years. Dewey and Beth moved to an Assisted Living facility on July 1, 2021. Beth prayed she would be a blessing to at least one person each day. Beth wishes to thank each of you for attending this service. She wants you to know she appreciates the love and kindness you have all shown to her. May God bless you all. Visit our guestbook at
