Ali Rahnamoon Obituary

Ali Rahnamoon CHARLESTON - Ali Rahnamoon's open and welcoming heart has stopped on June 16, 2024, and with his passing a cornerstone of Charleston's hospitality industry is gone. Born to educators, Zahra Daneshvar Tehrani and Mohamad Reza Rahnamoon, in Tehran, Iran on January 28, 1948, Ali traveled the world while working for Iran Air, opening his eyes and arms to people of every stripe. Once that country's revolution began, Ali and his best friend, Shahram Aghapour, immigrated to chilly Boston, where they worked together in a pizza parlor. Thanks to a business loan from Ali's uncle, the conjoined friends were able to further immigrate. This time to the sunny Charleston, South Carolina. Here, they opened Papillon, and converted the former Sailors church on The Market to Ferrante's Restaurant. Saffron Restaurant and Bakery opened in what had been Jacob's Hosiery in 1986. It was at these restaurants that Charlestonians would see two grown men bicker and laugh with each other like an old married couple Ali would make a fuss over whoever came through the door, from those down on their luck to the highest reaches of society. They were all treated like kings and queens whether they were one of Ali's and Saffron's most enduring supporters were parishioners from Mother Emanuel AME Church around the corner. In a town that had experienced racial strife, both that church's members and Ali saw only one thing in each other and that was kinship. Locals weren't the only ones to know Ali's embrace, as he opened his doors to luminaries like Elizabeth Taylor, Hillary Clinton, Bill Murray, who is now a local just like Joe Riley and Philip Simmons, also the cast of army wives also frequented Saffrons. Ali's heart and countenance was such that an immigrant from Persia, fleeing a revolution, would fit together like a missing piece of a puzzle with the members of Mother Emanuel AME church. He would occassionally attend services there and they opened his doors to its flock in the wake of an unforgettable shooting. It is no coincidence, then, that Ali's family name, Rahnamoon, is Farsi for "The Guide." His legacy has left a significant impact. Many have claimed to be the originator of the Holy City's restaurant scene. But the other restauranteurs, like the recently departed Mark Cummings, would point at Ali as being one of the founding fathers. He was famous for his pineapple pizza at Pappions Ironically, the pineaple is the city symbol of hospitality. Ali leaves behind much. Two former wives, Lenora Owens of Mount Pleasant, and Pamela Scott Strich of West Ashley. He and Pamela had one son together, JJ Rahnamoon, but true to form he loved the two boys now men that she brought into the marriage, Max and Todd Strich. JJ married Stefany, whom Ali dubbed the "Queen of Saffron's," and together they had his grandson, Ollie Rahnamoon, whose name when spoken quickly sounds just like his grandfather's. Ali's sister, Zohreh, followed him eventually to the New World, living now in Vancouver, British Columbia, where she is comforted by her Husband, Ahmad; and daughters, Marjan and Mojgan. If Ali were here today, he would tell everyone his family extended into Shahram Agapour's house, with his wife, Diane, and their children, Gracie and Andrew. And if Ali were here today, again, he would make each and every one of us in the room feel like family, like we were important, like we belonged. Today, we come not to honor a king, but to praise God for his big heart and his legacy and to carry on welcoming others into our homes and hearts like he did in Charleston for so very long. A Celebration of his Life will take place Sunday the 23rd from 2-5pm at 1786 Opal Ave., Charleston, SC 29407.

Saffron has been one of my favorite restaurants since I moved to Charleston 20 years ago. He catered events for me but the She Crab Soup was the BEST I´ve ever had! I shared with friends in many cities over the years!
JJ, my sympathies are with you and your family.

I was fortunate to have known both Ali and Shahram during my years in Charleston during the `90s and remember both as honorable businessmen and excellent restauranteurs. Ali always was a gracious host with a flair for insuring that no customer left disappointed.

I will always remember the times we spent together. One thing, other than the marvelous foods and lavish deserts, I will always remember and cherish time spent together on the weekends. Every saturday at subway and church and the chinese buffet on Sundays. Also Karyssa and the kids enjoyed getting to know you. David loved the many pizzas together and Lessie Lou loved eating your ice cream while you were resting. We all Loved and cherish our time together. I pray JJ, Todd and I make you proud Rest in peace Baba

Sitting at Saffrons with the family was always the best time. I hold the memories of Ali carrying Alice and Anders around very fondly. He welcomed me to the family so genuinely and kindly when I married your brother. He will be missed. I´m so sorry for your loss.

I worked with Ali at Papillon and he was such an amazing person. His smile was infectious and would light up the room. He was such a loving and kind man with a heart of gold. I am so sorry for your loss.

Ali was the kindest uncle in the world. He was always smiling, making time for others, telling the best stories, generous, offering a helping hand, and helping those in need without them asking. He always made sure everyone was fed in his restaurant and home! I fell in love with Charleston because of his beautiful memories and presence there and I always knew I had a friend and family who I could count on, in Charleston! I Love you to the moon and back uncle Ali! You are now pain free and in safe hands! Until we meet again...
