Alfred Buchanan Obituary

Alfred "Bruce" Buchanan SUMMERVILLE - Alfred "Bruce" Buchanan, 90, of Summerville, widower of June Elizabeth Buchanan, passed away on Thursday, August 21, 2014 at The Villages of Summerville. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at 4 o'clock PM at Bethany United Methodist Church, Spell Chapel in Summerville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The United Way, 6296 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29406 or The Salvation Army, 4248 Dorchester Road, North Charleston, SC 29405. Bruce Buchanan was a loving husband and father. Family commitment was always his priority. Bruce was born in 1923 in Chicago, IL. During World War II, he served in the Navy where he met his future wife, June Zeigler. After the war, the couple returned to Chicago for a short time to complete Bruce's education and begin his career in broadcasting. While he hoped to become a radio sports announcer, the majority of his long broadcasting career was spent at the management level in Greenville, SC where he and his wife, June, raised four daughters. As Vice President of Radio for Multi Media, Inc he managed WFBC AM & FM in Greenville and supervised twelve other stations throughout the South and Midwest. He was also Executive Producer of the Clemson Radio Sports Network and served on advisory boards for The Associated Press, NBC, The National Association of Radio Broadcasters and advocated for a broadcasting program at USC. Civically, Buchanan served terms as president or chairman of the Greenville Downtown Lions Club, the Greenville YMCA, the Greenville United Way and the Greenville Jaycees Civic Affairs Committee (which spearheaded the creation of the Greenville Zoo) and led fundraisers for Meals on Wheels, Children's Welfare and local theater groups. As a supporter of his children's athletics, he led the development/construction of the Gower Estates Community Swimming Pool, helped organize and develop the Swim Association Invitational League (SAIL) and presided over both. SAIL now serves thousands of Greenville youngsters. A lifelong Methodist, Buchanan held a "Local Preacher's license at age fourteen and remained a dedicated church worker all of his life. A longtime member of Buncombe Street United Methodist Church in Greenville, he served as Commission on Education Chairman, Stewardship Chairman, Chairman of the Board, taught Sunday School, and coached girls' basketball. Upon retirement and moving to Kiawah Island, Buchanan spent three of their six years there serving as president of the island's Property Owners' Association. Buchanan and his wife later moved to Summerville permanently and became members of Bethany United Methodist Church where Bruce served on several committees. He is survived by his four daughters: Kathy B. McConnell, Nancy B. Freeman, Janet B. Kerr, and Elizabeth B. Mills; 12 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Bruce Buchanan was a fine man who gave me a job 32 years ago in the media business at WFBC radio. I am still in the advertising business today and owe a debt of gratitude to him for starting what has turned out to be my career. Meadors Tanner

Your dad was my first boss at WFBC. I came there in 1960 after graduating from
Greenville High! I was his secretary until I moved into the traffic department after several years. I married while working at WFBC and worked until two weeks before our son was born in 1967. Mr. Buchanan was always so kind to me and I have wondered about him through the years. I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to thank him for his kindness to me. May God be with you all and comfort you at this time. Thanks for letting me share these memories. Sincerely, Camilla Langley Jameson.
