Alexander Costas Obituary

COSTAS, SR., Alexander FLORENCE, SC - Alexander Harry Costas, Sr., 74, passed away Monday, August 6, 2007 at McLeod Regional Medical Center as a result of injuries received in a truck accident on November 26, 2006. Alex was born in Spartanburg, SC on January 15, 1933, a son of the late Marika and Harry Costas. He graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1951, lettering in football. He attended Wofford College for two years until he went into the US Army. He was stationed at Fort Knox, KY as a member of a tank battalion and was honorably discharged in August 1956. After his discharge, he enrolled at the University of South Carolina in Columbia where he completed his college education majoring in Business Administration. In 1959 he entered the restaurant business in Gastonia, NC operating the Beacon Drive-In for several years until he moved to Florence in December 1966 to help his brother, Pete Costas, operate The Gangplank Seafood Restaurant. He was associated with the Gangplank for many years and became its owner in 1972. He retired in 1999 when the restaurant was sold. He served on the Transfiguration Church Board of Directors, was a life member of the Optimist Club, Head Coach for Little League Majors for several years, was a Mason and Shriner and devoted friend of Bill W. for over 24 years, giving of his experience, strength and hope to this worldwide fellowship. Unknown to him, Mr. Alex , as he was affectionately known, had great influence upon the lives of many persons as evident by the great number of people who came to visit and share their gratitude and experiences with the family while he was in the hospital. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and hunting whenever he had the time away from the restaurant, teaching his children, especially Lex, the love of fishing and hunting at an early age. He also taught his children to believe in the goodness of people and not to be scared to take a chance at whatever endeavor they sought. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather Papou , and friend who will be terribly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Pete Costas and nephews, Pete Costas, Jr. and Eric Costas. Surviving are his loving wife of 50 years, Sophia Athans Costas; daughter, Crystal (Johnny) Hanna, Jr. of Murrells Inlet, SC; son, Lex (Kim) Costas, Jr. of Daniel Island, SC; grandchildren, Blakely Alexander Hanna, Xan Costas, III, twins, Anna Jane and Alexa Tamma Costas; brother, Gus Costas of Gastonia, SC; sister-in-law, Pauline Costas and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Transfiguration of Our Savior Greek Orthodox Church, 2990 South Cashua Drive, Florence, SC 29501. A Trisagion service will be held on Tuesday, August 7, 2007 at 7:00 PM at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home with visitation to follow the service until 9:00 PM. Miss Sophia and family,
We had the honor and privilege of caring for Mr Alex while he was a patient at Regency Hospital. We appreciate being able to spend time with you both. Even in this difficult time, you both have taught us all how to be loving spouses, caring friends and we are all (everyone of our staff memebers) better people for knowing Mr Alex. Miss Sophia, we are here for you always!

I don't think I have ever met a kinder, gentler soul than Mr. Alex. He always had a kind word, a smile, a hug or the time to stop and chat. Over the years that I have been priviledged enough to know Mrs. Sophie, Mr. Alex, Johnny, Crystal and Blakely, the love and support their family shows one another and all they hold dear has been an inspiration and encouragement to me. My family and I are so grateful for the time we were allowed to know him. You all know that our hearts and prayers are with you. My God wrap all of you in the comfort of His arms and ease your pain as only He can. We love you all.

No more pain, no more tears
No more worries, no more fears.
What once graced our lives
with the goodness of love,
has now gone to his rightful place in heaven above.
The stars seem a little brighter,
the sky a deeper blue.
Our Mr. Alex looks down on us all,
with a love forever true.

Mrs. Sophia and Family,

My heart and prayers are with you in this hour…………

Alex was truly an example of the unconditional love and acceptance available to those seeking a ray of hope through the path made plan by Bill W. I am grateful that 18 years later, I can still remember the lessons in life that he taught on Sunday Mornings by sharing his experience, strength and hope.

As stated in the Big Book paraphrased, “He shall be with us in the Fellowship of the Spirit, and we will surely meet again as we trudge the Road of Happy Destiny”.

May God Continue to Bless and Keep You,

Lynda/Bill Rowe

Without Mr. Alex, Mrs. Sophia and The Gangplank my family would not be a family. My mother was a hostess and my father did everything from cutting grass to frying fish. They met at the Gangplank and began dating while working there, 7 years later they married and within 4 years my sister and I were born. As a child I remember eating at The Gangplank and getting hugs and kisses every time we came in from Mrs. Sophia and Mr. Alex. Thank you Mr. Alex for your love that you displayed to my family without you my family wouldn't be! You will be truly missed and loved always!
