Alexander Capers Obituary

Alexander J. Capers, Jr. CAMERON, SC - LTC Alexander J. Capers Jr., United State Army Retired, passed away on Wednesday, February 01, 2012, at his residence. He was 69. LTC Capers was born in Walterboro on 18 April, 1942 to the late Alexander J. and Elizabeth P. Capers. He attended Walterboro schools and graduated from Porter Military Academy in Charleston. Jim later graduated with honors from Carey College in Hattiesburg, MS. LTC Capers served in the Army for over 25 years in the enlisted, Warrant Officer and, after receiving a direct commission in Armor, as a Commissioned Officer. A Master Army Aviator, he served in Germany, Korea, two tours in Vietnam and numerous posts in the U.S. in Aviation, Armor, and Comptroller positions retiring as the Director of Resource Management, Fort Devens, MA. He was also an honor graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College. During his 25+ years of service, LTC Capers was recognized over 30 times with awards for service and valor to include the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart. After retiring from the Army, Jim started his second career with PHI, Inc. in the Gulf of Mexico as a pilot and then an Area manager before retiring for the second time. Jim was an avid reader, dog lover, and model railroader, particularly the ACL and SRR. He is survived by his first wife Rebecca Neely Capers of the home. There are three sons, Jay Capers (Debbie) of Asheboro, NC, Bill Capers (Shanda) of Columbia, and Robbie Capers of Lugoff, and one daughter Lynn of Houston, TX. He is also survived by two granddaughters and a grandson. He was preceded in death by his second wife, Jane. Visitation will be held Saturday evening from 5-7 PM at Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home of Walterboro. Interment, with full military honors, will be held at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice or to either Resurrection Lutheran Church, Cameron, SC or to Salem United Methodist Church, Hendersonville, SC. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude and appreciation to Grove Park Hospice for the care and support given to Jim and the family throughout his illness.
