Alexander Altman Obituary

ALTMAN, A. B. SUMMERVILLE, S.C. - Mr. Alexander Bruce Altman, Jr., 82, of Summerville, SC, entered into eternal rest on October 26, 2007 at Trident Medical Center. Mr. Altman was born on July 17, 1925 in Galivants Ferry, SC, a son of the late Alexander Bruce Altman, Sr. and Leila Atkinson Altman. He moved his family from Mullins, SC to Summerville, SC in 1956 and has been an active member of Bethany United Methodist Church for 51 years. He was a member of the choir, Men's Club, and Charles Peace Sunday School Class and served the church in multiple roles including Youth Counselor. Mr. Altman was a graduate of Aynor High School where he was a member of the basketball and track teams and served as President of his class. He was an Army veteran of WWII and attended Clemson in the first class of veterans utilizing the new GI Bill. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1989. Mr. Altman loved Blue Grass and Gospel music and performed as a member of the Keytone quartet. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and deer and turkey hunter including primitive weapon hunts. Survivors include his beloved wife of 59 years, Miriam Best Altman; two sons, one daughter, and their spouses: Alexander Bruce Altman III and Phala Robinson Altman of Rutherfordton, NC and Barnwell, SC; Carol Altman Cotter and Col. Stephen Cotter of Summerville, SC; and, John Wingard Altman and Dodie Boyle Altman of Summerville, SC. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Kim Cotter Baile, her husband Rev. Charles Baile of Gaithersburg, MD, and their children Haddon, Elise, and Karis; Stephen Tradd Cotter and his fiancée Olga Katic of Liberty, SC; Alexander Bruce Altman, IV and his wife Alyson Burk Altman of Fort Mill, SC; Bryan David Altman of Rutherfordton, NC; John Pressley Altman of Summerville, SC; and Garry Jennings Harley, Jr. and his wi fe Arianna Harley of Greenville, SC, and their children Taylor, Ranna, and Jennings. Mr. Altman is also survived by two brothers and a sister: Luther Dunlap Altman of Galivants Ferry, SC; George Frierson Altman of Moncks Corner, SC; Leona Altman Rutland of Mt. Pleasant, SC. Mr. Altman was pre-deceased by one brother, A. David Altman of Galivants Ferry, SC and one sister, Helen Altman Knight of Summerville, SC. Funeral services will be held at Bethany United Methodist Church on Monday, October 29, 2007 at 10 am. Burial will follow at Sandy Plain United Methodist Church, 17475 Pee Dee Road North, Galivants Ferry, SC 29544 at 4 pm. The family will receive friends from 6 pm to 8 pm on Sunday, October 28, 2007 at Parks Funeral Home, 130 W. 1st North Street, Summerville, SC.
