Alexa Ackerman Obituary

Alexa Ackerman MT. PLEASANT - On February 5th, surrounded by family and friends, Margaret Alexa Fairey Ackerman, 90, passed away peacefully to be reunited with the love of her life for 69 years, Charles L. Ackerman, and her son, Charles L. Ackerman, Jr. (Charlie). Born in St. George, SC, Alexa was the daughter of Arthur and Margaret Fairey. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Frankie Fairey Johnson. Alexa married "the boy next door", literally, after completing an education degree in three and a half years and joining the Chi Omega sorority at the University of South Carolina. Beginning her 30-year teaching career at Moultrie High School and later at Laing Middle School, she taught generations of Mt. Pleasant students, most of whom she remembered and could call by name after she retired. After retirement, Alexa and her husband traveled extensively. Later "Gex" refocused all her attention on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an active member of Hibben United Methodist Church for 69 years. Alexa is survived by her daughter, Leslie Tanner (Dale) in Mt. Pleasant; her grandchildren, Stafford "Ford" Dale Tanner, ll in Charleston, Margaret Tanner Miler (Sherwood) in Atlanta, GA; and her great-grandchildren, Daniel Sherwood Miler V and Charles Ackerman Miler. Donations may be made to Hibben United Methodist Church, 690 Coleman Blvd., Mt. Pleasant, SC, 29464. Funeral arrangements for graveside services at Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens on Saturday, February 17th, at 2:00 are by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mt. Pleasant Chapel. A memorial message may be sent to the family on our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com.

Miss Alexa was such a good friend to my Mom, Myrtle. Definitely an awesome neighbor. I have so many memories of her sense of humor and kindness. She once took me out for ice cream at Pitt Street Pharmacy as a diversion while Mom was at the hospital with my sister. Chocolate has always been my favorite. Alexa convinced me to order my 1st chocolate malted milkshake, but certainly not my last. Leslie, I am praying for you and your family.

Mrs. Ackerman was the finest woman and mother I ever had the pleasure of knowing as well as one my best and favorite teachers. In Mt. Pleasant it took a village to raise us. As a friend of Charlie's I was graced by being shaped by Mr. and Mrs. Ackerman when I visited Charlie. Mr. Ackerman built us a Put - Put course. We played Rockem-Sockem Robots and vibrating board football in the garage. We even snuck off the Creature Beach without being caught. My memories are flooding me right now and I cannot share them all as this would be come a novel. I am so glad that Mr and Mrs Ackerman will be reunited with Charlie, it will be a big time!
