Albert Thalheimer Obituary

Albert Foster Thalheimer Charleston - Albert Foster Thalheimer died on September 23, 2022, after living a fabulous and wonderful life. Foster was born in Rhode Island on October 22, 1940, and was one of five sons born to Albert Thalheimer, Jr. and his wife, Helen Foster Thalheimer. He graduated from Charleston High School in West Virginia, the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, with a BS from the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School (1962) and NYU Graduate School of Retailing (1964). Foster moved to New York and was a partner at Merrill Lynch. Foster next became a partner at Bacon Whipple & Co. where, for thirty-five years, he worked in London for a part of each year. Subsequently, he became a Senior Vice President at Stifel Nicolaus & Company before starting his own financial firm, Thalheimer and Company, which he ran for twenty-five years. In 2009, he and his wife Betty, an accomplished artist, moved from New York City to Charleston, South Carolina. A passionate philanthropist, Foster served on the Board of Trustees of Operation Sight, served on the Board of Trustees of the College of Charleston's library and was very active in the College's MBA Mentor Program. In addition to his community volunteer work, Foster and Betty enjoyed extensive travel. Foster was a brilliant raconteur, made friends easily, and had a unique style and manner. Friends are the measure of a man, and Foster had enduring bonds with friends from around the world, from all walks of life, and of all ages. He loved and was loved by his family. He was predeceased by his mother and father and his brothers, Richard Thalheimer and William Howard Thalheimer. He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Wiseman Thalheimer, who was the first sister to enter the Thalheimer family. He is also survived by his brothers, David (his wife, Francine) and Jonathan (his wife, Robin); sisters-in-law, Sally and Cynthia; nieces and nephews, Mark Hall, Beth Ann Gauthier, Jenny Thalheimer Rosenberg, Liza Thalheimer, Josh Thalheimer, Mason Thalheimer, Foster Thalheimer, Meyer Thalheimer, and Ezra Thalheimer; and many grand nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 28, 2022, at Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim (KKBE) Reform Jewish Congregation. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Operation Sight, 1101 Clarity Rd., Suite 100, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 or the College of Charleston Library, 66 George St., Charleston, SC 29424. Donations may also be made to two family funds set up at the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation, PO Box 3041, Charleston, WV 25331: (i) the Thalheimer Family Supplemental Scholarship Fund, to assist students by supplementing their scholarship funds with money for non-tuition expenses, and (ii) the Albert and Helen Thalheimer Fund, to purchase art for the Clay Center's Avampato Museum. Foster was one-of-a-kind and will be greatly missed by so many. His intelligence, quick wit and humor, as well as his ability to spin a tale, made him a fascinating person. I knew him from camp days, was his assistant at his clever magic shows and went on a few road trips with him and other pals. I well remember the beautiful wedding of Foster and Betty in Savannah, as well as their hospitality when they lived in NYC.
Betty, take comfort in knowing that Foster loved you and always wanted the best for you. Personally, I feel fortunate that I was a friend of someone as unique as Foster. I think he added something to the lives of everyone he knew. Yes, he will be missed, but remembered.
