Al Roberts Obituary

Al Roberts VARNVILLE, SC - Mr. Alfred Webb Roberts, 86, of Varnville, passed away Friday, January 8, 2016 in an automobile accident. Funeral services will be at 11 am, Saturday, January 16, 2016, at The Brice W. Herndon and Sons Funeral Home, Varnville-Hampton Chapel. Interment will follow in the Varnville Cemetery. Born January 9, 1929, in Cherokee County, Georgia, he was a son of the late Carl Weldon Roberts and Venita Minch Roberts. He was a retired mechanical engineer for Westinghouse, where he worked for 30 years. He served his country in the United States Air Force and was a member of the American Legion Post #108. He served on the Varnville Town Council, was a Certified Flight Instructor, and also flew for the US Forestry Commission. Al spent much of his time working on carpentry that he enjoyed making for his wife, driving around town, and spending time with his "associates" at the Hardee's coffee shop. Al was an active member of the Varnville and Hampton communities and will be missed by many. He will be remembered for his kind heart and desire to help others. Al is survived by his wife of 62 years, Kathryne Dopko Roberts of Varnville; children, Daniel Roberts of Florida, Jo Anna Roberts of North Carolina, Cynthia Caton and her husband Dr. Robert Caton of California, and Rene;e Jenkins and her husband Patrick Jenkins of Georgia; 7 grandchildren, Pierre Matthey, Se;rge Matthey, Matt Roberts, Alexandria Caton, Kelly Frasier, Steven Caton, and Eric Jenkins; and 1 great grandchild, Pierre Matthey, Jr. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Matthey; 2 grandchildren, Jonathan Matthey and Kate Frasier; and 2 brothers, Pepper Roberts and Martin Roberts.
