John Hersch Obituary

John Sterling Hersch, 80, of Moncks Corner, South Carolina, passed away on June 21, 2023, at his daughter and son in-law's home in Manassas, Virginia. He preferred to be called Sterling by those who knew him.



Sterling was born in Rock Hall, Maryland to Sterling Leroy Hersch and Dorothea Mae Hersch on February 1, 1943. He grew up in Chesapeake City, Maryland with his parents and three sisters in a home full of love and laughter.



He joined the United States Navy at the age of 18 in June 1961 and retired after 21 years of honorable service in May 1982. During his esteemed career he served on the U.S.S. CHARR SS-328, U.S.S RAZORBACK SS-394, U.S.S. SIRAGO SS-485, U.S.S. DACE SS-607, and the U.S.S. DALHGRHEN DDG-43. He was stationed at the U.S. Naval Facilities in Nantucket, Massachusetts and Keflavik, Iceland and attended the Naval Sub School in Groton, Connecticut. His last assignment before retirement was at the NATCO NAS Memphis in Millington, Tennessee.



After retiring from the United States Navy Sterling went on to work for RCA, GTE, and The Boeing Company from which he retired as a Director, Military Intelligence, in December 2012.



He was married to Linda Norene Hersch who preceded him in death in 2011. Sterling's final resting place will be beside Linda in Gerrardstown, West Virginia.



Sterling is survived by his children Yvonne Lynn Grenfell, Danielle Rae Ryan (Tony), John Sterling Hersch II (Adina) as well as stepchildren Christopher Dennis (Elina), and Candice Gagne (Mike). He is also survived by his sisters Barbara Lee Taylor, Deanna Jean Thomas (Harold), and Dorothea Rae Jones (Curtis).



Sterling also leaves behind his grandchildren Anthony Craig Hersch (Claire), Carroll Joseph Grenfell III, Christopher Jordan Grenfell (Sarah), Chase Sterling Ryan, Jackson Patrick Ryan, Julia Kaitlyn Ann Hersch, Zachary Kaden Hersch, Landon Gagne, Norene Gagne, and Sofia Dennis. He has one great-grandchild Carter La'Nay Grenfell.



Sterling requested a graveside service for family members which will be held on June 29th at 11:00 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Gerrardstown, West Virginia.
