Vera "Nell" Simon, former resident of Richmond for more than 65 years, born Nov. 22, 1921, in Tyler, Tx; died Nov. 6, 2014 at the age of 92. She had resided the last 2-1/2 years in San Jose at a senior complex in Willow Glen. Nell was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Gale G. Simon, a retired Richmond Police Officer. She would often bake her delicious cinnamon rolls for the entire PD, and deliver them hot in the morning right from the oven! Nell and Gale were active members of the Church of Christ in Vallejo for many years. They also enjoyed singing karaoke in several local spots, and Nell continued until she celebrated her 90th She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting and loved knitting house slippers for everyone she knew—probably making hundreds over her lifetime! A wonderful accomplishment that she was very proud of was a trip that she and Gale made, together on a tandem bike in 1992, while in their 70's. The journey began at Lake Atasca, MN, following the Mississippi River Road, and ended in Venice, LA. Over the course of 35days, they averaged 60 miles a day, crossing 10 states for a total of 2060 miles! She is survived by her 3 grown children: Timothy Simon of Bend, OR; Patricia Plumb of Walnut Creek, CA; and Terry Christiansen of San Jose, CA; 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. She had a heart as "big as Texas" and loved so many as though they were her own—she will be missed! Arrangements are being made by Neptune Society; and a small family-only celebration in her memory will be held on her birthday.
