Meyer, Jr.
GREENWOOD, SC - Theodore Jacob Meyer, Jr. (Ted), 92, formerly of Cherokee Hills and Wesley Commons, Greenwood, SC, died peacefully on January 16, 2016 at Hospice House.
He was born March 8, 1923 in Charlotte, NC to the late Theodore Jacob and Pearl Jenkins Meyer. He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Jean Elizabeth Dibble. He graduated from Central High School in 1940 and North Carolina State in 1946 with a degree in mechanical engineering.
He served in World War II in the China-Burma Theater as a P-47 fighter pilot in the 10th Air Force, where he received the Distinguished Flying Cross.
He spent his career as a textile executive for Riegel Textile Corp., retiring as Executive Vice-President. He served in numerous leadership positions including President of the Southern Textile Manufacturers Association. After his retirement, he worked as a private consultant, taught at Piedmont Technical College and volunteered with the Greenwood Soup Kitchen. He was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club and a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church in Greenwood, SC, where he served as a Deacon.
He is survived by sons Dr. Theodore Mark Meyer (Victoria), Aiken SC and Christopher Ayden Meyer (Beth), Greenwood, SC, six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. His true passions were his family, flying, Charlotte and his German heritage. He enjoyed boating, golfing, and fishing (but not catching).
A graveside service will be in the historic Elmwood Cemetery in Charlotte on Tuesday, January 19th at 10am.
The memorial service will follow at the First Presbyterian Church in Greenwood at 3pm, with Rev. Dr. Kyle Hite officiating.
The family will greet friends following the service at the church in Alexander Hall.
The family wishes to thank the caring staff at Wesley Commons, Self Regional and Hospice House as well as Drs. OM Cobb and Tom Pritchard for their compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 108 East Cambridge Ave, Greenwood, SC 29646 or a charity of one's choice.
